JUST IN: Haryana government orders probe into alleged rapes in Murthal during Jat stir.

The government action comes a day after the Punjab and Haryana high court took suo-motu cognizance of news reports about mass gang rapes of women in Haryana's Murthal during the Jat reservation protest and subsequent blockade.

Till 48 hours ago, the Haryana government, senior bureaucrats and police officials continued to vehemently deny reports of any such incident.

"Following the report the Haryana government formed a committee of a financial commissioner and an inspector general of police, which worked on every angle to find the facts, but found that the news is false, Haryana DGP, Yash Pal Singal said.

The incident came to light on Tuesday, that at least 10 women who were travelling to NCR was dragged out of their cars and sexually assaulted on Monday.

"District officials who arrived there, instead of investigating the matter, persuaded the families to take the women home. Many were provided transport," The Tribune quoting an eyewitness reported.
