Encounter breaks out between militants, security forces in J-K

One militant was killed in an ongoing encounter in south Kashmir Pulwama district this afternoon.

Mukhtar Ahmed/ Rediff.com reports from Srinagar that a senior police officer said troops of Rashtriya Rifles and police surrounded Lalhar village near Kakpora in Pulwama district this afternoon.

"The operation was launched on specific information about presence of a group of militants in the village, " the officer said.

He said militants opened fire at the surrounding troops triggering an encounter.

"One militant has been killed in the encounter so far. The operation is on," he added.

Sunday's gunfight came a day after five militants and two army troopers were killed in an encounter in frontier Kupwara district.
