The Centre may reopen the Ishrat Jahan case with the CBI likely to initiate a fresh FIR on the basis of David Headley's deposition today. The Pakistani-American terrorist on Thursday said that Ishrat Jahan -- who was killed in an alleged fake encounter in 2004 in Gujarat --was actually a suicide bomber of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba terror outfit.

The Centre wants to book the officials who it believes was responsible for changing the home ministry affidavit in 2013. The CBI may also take on a few politicians including former union ministers as the centre believes the affidavit was altered at that level.

The first affidavit from the union home ministry to the Gujarat High Court said that there was reliable information with the central government that the LeT was plotting the assassination of top leaders of Gujarat. The revised affidavit said the information from the Intelligence Bureau was a tip-off, and could not be seen as valid ground for the shootout.

BJP MPs in both houses of Parliament will use the Ishrat Jahan case to their benefit in parliament to embarrass the Congress including Sonia and Rahul. The UPA has maintained that Ishrat Jahan was innocent.

The case will be used by the BJP to weigh in on the Congress when it stalls the Budget session as it will.
