Prime Minister Narendra Modi can advance the interest of Indian people by working "effectively" with US President Barack Obama, who will continue to look for ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship, the White House has said.

In the last year of his administration, Obama would continue working to strengthen India-US relationship, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.

"I think that should be a good indication to you that, while obviously Prime Minister Modi takes seriously the responsibility that he has to advocate for the citizens of his country, he can advance the interest of the people of India by working effectively with President Obama," Earnest said.

"And that's a good thing. It's a good thing for our two countries. It's a good thing for the citizens of our two countries," Earnest said, adding "I would expect the president will continue to look for ways to strengthen the relationship."
