A United Nations panel has ruled in favour of Wikileaks founder Julain Assange over his unlawful detention in the UK.

Assange has said he would accept arrest by the UK police if a UN panel investigating his case rules against him, reports the Independent.

The 44-year-old is planning to leave the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he sought political asylum in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, on Friday.

Assange is wanted in Sweden for questioning over allegations of sexual assault in 2010. He denies the claims. The Australian fears Sweden will extradite him to authorities in the US where he could be put on trial over the activities of the WikiLeaks website, which has published thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention is considering Assange's request for relief after he filed a complaint against the UK and Sweden in 2014. He said he was being arbitrarily detained in the Embassy.
