Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi have condoled the loss of lives of 10 soldiers whose whereabouts are unknown since their post was hit by a massive avalanche in Siachen Glacier.

However, there have been no updates about the rescue operations from the Army or the MoD so far. Earlier, the MoD had said that the chances for survival of the soldiers are 'very remote'.

'Demise of soldiers in Siachen is very tragic. I salute brave soldiers who gave their lives to nation. Condolences to their families,' Modi tweeted on Thursday evening.

"My heartfelt condolences to near and dear ones of our brave soldiers who were martyred in line of duty. It is our duty to take care of their families,' said Parrikar on the tragedy, hours after an MoD release said that specialised equipment and teams are being used to locate and rescue the survivors.

While the Congress vice president tweeted, 'Very sad to know that 10 of our brave soldiers lost their lives in an avalanche in Siachen. My thoughts and prayers are with soldiers' families.'
