Two persons have been arrested by Crime Branch of Delhi Police for depositing black money worth Rs 34 crore in the fake accounts opened by them in the Naya Bazar branch of a private bank in New Delhi.

The Crime Branch has arrested two men Rajkumar Goel, 47, and Ranjit, 29, from Naya Bazar area of Chandni Chowk, said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has unseated his actor-friend Shah Rukh Khan to become the top earning celebrity of 2016 in the Forbes India Celebrity 100 List with an estimated income of Rs 270.33 crore.

The other leading names in the list include skipper Virat Kohli, actor Akshay Kumar and M S Dhoni chronologically. However, the 50-year-old Salman is ranked at No 2 in terms of fame, which is topped by ace cricketer Kohli.

The magazine attributed the rise of Salman to his box office hits-- the Sooraj Barjatya-directed Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in late 2015 and then Sultan in 2016.

The magazine further said Salman's estimated total earnings constitutes 9.84 per cent of the total wealth of the top 100 celebs at Rs 2,745 crore for the year.

SRK at No 2, has reportedly earned Rs 221.75 crore and also comes at No 3 in terms of fame. He lost his perch at the top in what was a mixed year for him both in terms of box office success and brands endorsed.

17:21   Rahul's Suit Boot Ki Sarkar spiel (again) in Almora
Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of duping the poor, honest and hard-working people to help the 50 super rich families, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that demonetisation of high-value currency is not a surgical strike on corruption but firebombing on India's poor.

Addressing a rally in Almora, Gandhi escalated his attack on Prime Minister Modi and said that demonetisation is economic robbery.

"The Congress Party wants to obliterate corruption from India. The Congress will support any step against corruption. But notes ban wasn't against black money or corruption, it was economic robbery," said Gandhi.

"You have divided India into two halves. On one side, India's super rich - 50 families, on the other side the 99 percent of India, including the poor, the honest, hard-working people," he added.

The Congress vice-president also used the occasion to reach out to the farmers and labourers.

"Prime Minister Modi hasn't listened to the farmers, but he has forgiven 1.40 lakh crore in loans to 15 rich people but not farmers," said Gandhi.

"Speaking about labourers in Parliament, Prime Minister Modi said they dig holes. They made fun of labourers. Modi ji India's labourers don't dig holes, they build India," he added.Gandhi alleged that the 'suit boot ki Sarkar' was in its bid to help its "rich friends" snatching the rights of the poor.

15:37   India to provide help on boy's mother's request in Norway: EAM
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said India will provide help on the request of the mother of the boy, who has been taken away by the Norway authorities even as Norwegian embassy here asked for "restraint" in the case, assuring that it is being handled with "complete sensitivity and awareness".

Swaraj's reaction came a day after she had asked the Indian Ambassador in Oslo to send a report on the allegations made by the couple that the Norwegian authorities took away their five-year-old child on frivolous complaint of abuse.

While father and son are Norwegian nationals, the mother is an Indian citizen. "I have received the report. Father and son are Norwegian nationals. We will represent on request of the mother, who is an Indian national," Swaraj tweeted.

Reacting to the case, the Spokesperson in Norwegian Embassy said the mission is aware and understands "the concerns on the ongoing child welfare case involving an Norwegian/Indian family in Norway".

"The Embassy would like to reiterate that child welfare cases are handled in accordance to the Norwegian Child Welfare Act, which includes directions from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

"The Act applies to all children in Norway, regardless of their background, residential status or citizenship. The basic principle of the Act is that the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration.

"Since child welfare cases are highly sensitive, the cases are therefore subject to a strict duty of confidentiality. The Embassy, therefore, requests restraint and assures that the Norwegian authorities are dealing with the case with complete sensitivity and awareness. When available and permissible, updates on the case will be provided to the media and the general public."

This is the third case since 2011 when children have been taken away from their Indian-origin parents by the authorities in Norway on the grounds of abuse.

Separatists -- Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik -- in a joint statement, said the attempts would not be tolerated as these were things of life and death for Kashmiris.

09:08   Manipur: No curfew in most parts of Imphal today
Manipur blockade: Curfew relaxed in parts of Imphal East district till 9pm today, except in areas from Lamlong Bazar to Yaingangpokpi.

Curfew also continues on the stretch of Pangei-Saikul road from Lamlong bridge to Pangei.

The landlocked state has been experiencing severe hardship in supply of essential items since November 1 after United Naga Council imposed an indefinite economic
blockade on the two national highways that serve as lifeline for the state.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has asked the Manipur government to bring back normalcy in the state by removing the economic blockade imposed by a Naga group on its highway as he embarks on a day-long visit to Manipur.

"There is a constitutional duty of the state government to bring back normalcy and they should ensure that there is no blockade along the highway," Rijiju said.

Rijiju, Minister of State for Home Affairs, said the ground situation in Manipur continues to be worrisome and the Central government wants that law and order prevail in the state.

08:23   Economists paint a grim demonetisation future
Dilasha Seth & Amit Agnihotri report for Business Standard: Demonetisation is expected to negatively impact the overall economy and job generation, a number of economists told Parliament's standing committee on finance. Reserve Bank governor Urjit Patel was to come but could not; he will do so on January 18.

The panel heard four economists -- former chief statistician Pronab Sen; Mahesh Vyas, head of the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy; Rajiv Kumar, senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research; and Kavita Rao of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy.

It said it wished to assess the impact on the economy, including growth and inflation.

The demonetisation drive will hit job creation, beside adding to the stress on banks, the economists are learnt to have told the panel, chaired by M Veerappa Moily.

There was a view that the banks were unprepared. "Banks are facing an increase in liabilities without any commensurate increase in income and RBI needs to look into that," added a source. Banks have seen a flood of deposits since November 8.

One of the economists told the panel a clearer picture would emerge only by mid-January, when the industrial production numbers for November would be released. Three economists said that the impact would be largely negative. The panel will send a questionnaire for economists, to arrive at an action plan that could be suggested to the government.

08:15   Be warned, cash crunch to worsen
Rajeev Sharma tells us: The cash crunch is likely to worsen this weekend as the Reserve Bank of India will not send a fresh supply of currency notes to the banks for the next few days.

The RBI has instructed all banks to disburse the available cash very judiciously, knowledgeable sources said on Thursday.

It is not known why the RBI is going slow on refurbishing cash supplies to the banks at a time when the entire country is reeling under a cash crunch and only one week is left for people to deposit banned notes in their accounts.

The Central Bank of India has already issued a circular to all its branches, quoting the RBI as mentioned above.

Saturday, December 24, is a working day for banks. This means that the next two days are set to witness chaotic scenes and long queues at the banks.

00:13   Passenger removed from flight after confrontation with Ivanka Trump
A passenger was removed from a JetBlue Airways Corp plane at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after verbally accosting Ivanka Trump, the website TMZ reported.

Airline personnel escorted the man off the plane after he railed at US President-elect Donald Trump's daughter, TMZ said.

Ivanka Trump was en route to Hawaii for a vacation with her family, according to a report on the incident.

TMZ said the passenger told Ivanka Trump, "Your father is ruining our country," then continued, "Why is she on our flight? She should be flying private."

In an email, JetBlue confirmed that a passenger had been taken off the plane.

"The decision to remove a customer from a flight is not taken lightly," the airline said in response to questions about the alleged confrontation. "In this instance, our team worked to re-accommodate the party on the next available flight."

00:00   Snowden in 'contact with Russian intelligence': US report
Edward Snowden has been in contact with Russian intelligence officials since arriving in Russia in 2013, according to a new report from Congress.

"Since Snowden's arrival in Moscow, he has had, and continues to have, contact with Russian intelligence services," the 33-page report, issued Thursday by the bipartisan House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said.

Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked volumes of information on American intelligence and surveillance operations to the media, settled in Moscow after initially traveling to Hong Kong following his 2013 public disclosure of classified information. The Russian government granted asylum to Snowden shortly thereafter.

Large portions of the pertinent section, entitled "foreign influence," are redacted, but one paragraph reveals the Russian link, saying that Frants Klintsevich, the deputy chairman of the Russian parliament's defense and security committee, "publicly conceded that 'Snowden did share intelligence' with his government."
