Reserve Bank of India Governor Dr Urjit Patel will not depose before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance in New Delhi on Thursday, December 22, on demonetisation, reports Rajeev Sharma.

It would have been the first time that an RBI governor would have appeared before a Parliamentary panel, knowledgeable sources said.

However, Dr Patel expressed his inability to brief the committee because of a prior engagement.

The RBI governor has assured the Parliamentary panel he will do the needful at its next meeting.

Dr Patel is now expected to depose before the Parliamentary committee, either on January 9 or 16.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance consists of 31 members: 21 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. It is headed by M Veerappa Moily of the Congress, a former Union minister.
