Devyani Khobragade, the Indian diplomat who sparked controversy in 2013 in the US for alleged visa fraud, has entered the world of fiction with her first book, The White Sari.

The book is centered around Ratna, a modern Dalit girl, who meets the love of her life but falls under the trap of caste divisions. It depicts the anger, anxieties and agony of a Dalit woman who is bound by social consciousness and tries to break free out of the mould. The book is available on Juggernaut.

Khobragade, who was a deputy consul general in New York in 2013, was charged by the US authorities with committing visa fraud and providing false statements in her visa application. She was accused of paying her maid, a woman of Indian nationality, less than the minimum legal wage. She was arrested after she dropped off her daughters at their school and subjected to a body-cavity search. The episode led to a full-blown standoff between the US and Indian governments.
