Dr S Balachandran, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai says,
"The centre of Cyclone Vardah is now crossing the coast north of Chennai, some 10 km away. This will last from 3-4 pm, when there will be a period of calm. Between 4 pm and 7 pm, the cyclone's east side will cross the coast, and it will continue to rain heavily 11 pm. After 5.30 pm the cyclone will lose its intensity but strong winds will continue.
