23:27   Governor Rao reaches Chennai, heads to Apollo to see Jaya
Ch Vidyasagar Rao, governor of Tamil Nadu, has landed in Chennai from Mumbai, and will soon reach Apollo Hospital, where Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was admitted to the ICU today evening following a cardiac arrest. 

Rao, who is also governor of Maharashtra, was in Mumbai to attend a Navy Day function.  

ANI has tweeted that Jayalalithaa is on extracorporeal membrane heart assist device, and is being treated by expert doctors and critical care specialists at Apollo. Further, Dr Richard Beale from London also been consulted, and 'he has concurred with line of treatment by our cardiologists and pulmonologists,' Apollo Hospital has said. 

Meanwhile, the Chennai collector has asked all tahsildars to report to him immediately.

21:55   Jan Dhan deposits stabilise; get Rs 1,487 cr in 7 days
The big surge in deposits into Jan Dhan accounts after the demonetisation seems to be stabilizing now as just Rs 1,487 crore has been parked in them over 7 days to November 30, as against Rs 8,283 crore in the previous week.

Deposits in the 25.85 crore such accounts totalled Rs 74,321.55 crore at the end of November 30, as per the Finance Ministry data.

The overall amount was Rs 72,834.72 crore in 25.68 crore accounts at the end of November 23.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised entire nation with demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8, deposits in Jan Dhan accounts have increased by 28,685 crore. As of November 9, the balance in about 25.5 crore such accounts was Rs 45,636.61 crore.

Interestingly, the percentage of zero balance account still remains flat at about 22.85 per cent despite surge in deposits.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna was launched in August 2014 to increase banking penetration and promote financial inclusion in the country.

JUST IN: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest this evening, Apollo Hospital was quoted as saying by ANI.

She is being treated, monitored by experts, including Cardiologists, Pulmonologist and Critical care specialists, the hospital said.

Incentive of Rs 10 to be provided by Centre to district collectors/district magistrates/deputy commissioners for every individual who has transited to digital payment mode and has undertaken at least two successful transactions by any of the 5 methods of digital payment, reports ANI.

The modes include: Unified payment interface, USSD (*99#Banking), Aadhar-enabled payments, wallets, and RuPay/debit/credit/prepaid cards.

Top 10 best performing districts of India will be awarded the digital payment champions award by NITI Aayog/Government of India.

The first 50 panchayats which go cashless will be awarded the digital payment award of honour by NITI Aayog/Centre. -- ANI

20:13   70-year-old dies while filling withdrawal form at bank
A 70-year-old farmer collapsed and died while filling withdrawal form at a public sector bank near Papanasam in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, police said.

M Subramanian, from Vaazhkai village near Papanasam, had come to the bank with his wife. As he was filling the challan, he suddenly collapsed, they said.

A senior bank official said some staffers tried to administer first aid and customers rushed to offer help. An employee offered him some water, but he did not respond, he said.

An ambulance service was called and on arrival a doctor checked Subramanian and pronounced him dead, he said.

The bank official said the farmer was a long-time customer and had come to the bank last week also when there was heavy crowd.

"Yesterday, he came at 10.23 am and collapsed at 10.25 am itself. He was not standing in the queue. He collapsed when he was filling the challan," the official was quoted as saying by PTI.

A senior police officer said it was 'natural death' and hence no case was registered.

"We have not registered a case since it is death due to natural causes. Nobody gave any complaint. The body was later taken to his home town and cremated in the evening," the officer, who did not wish to be named, said.-- PTI

19:20   Another school building damaged in fire in J&K
A school building was partially damaged in a blaze in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said today.

The fire broke out in Government High School at Larnoo in Kokernag area of the district during the night, a police official said.

He said the fire damaged the rooftop of the single-storey building.

The flames were brought under control by police and fire and emergency department personnel, the official said, adding that no was injured in the incident.

The cause of the fire is being ascertained, the official said.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today assured help to a PhD scholar in AIIMS, where the minister is undergoing treatment for kidney failure.

'Geeta -- I am also in AIIMS. Pl come and see me here. I will do my best to help you,' Swaraj tweeted.

The minister's response came as she was approached on twitter with a request, '@SushmaSwaraj I am PhD scholar in AIIMS. Can you please help me to get my VISA for AUS (Australia) in order to present a paper?'

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reads Amritsar Declaration at 6th Ministerial Conference of Heart of Asia:

* Heart of Asia Declaration recognises terrorism as the biggest threat to peace; demands immediate end to all forms of terrorism.

* We remain concerned by high level of violence in Afghan caused by Taliban, terrorist groups including Islamic State/Daesh and its affiliates Lahskar-e-Tayyaba, Jaish-e-Mohamed etc.

Raising question over Prime Minister Narendra Modis idea of a cashless society, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said that the Centre has not taken any initiative to apprise the rural population of the concept.

'You (Modi) should tell what preparations were made for digital India? Who will teach cashless transaction? How will it reach villages? Youth might be able to do it but what about others?' Akhilesh said during an event in Lucknow.

'We have given laptops in villages. Over one crore registration has been done so far for our smartphone scheme. You (PM) should tell what have you done? You should know that the government which gives pain to people does not survive,' he said.

Comparing the performance of his government with that of the Centre, Akhilesh said, "They should compete with the UP government on development as tremendous work has been done in the state in the past four years."

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre, he said, "Yatras of BJP have failed due to demonetisation. The people had to line up in queue due to which it failed."

The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs 20 notes with inset letter L in both number panels; all Rs 20 notes issued in the past will continue to be legal tender.

The RBI will also issue new Rs 50 notes without inset letter in both number panels; all Rs 50 notes issued in past will continue to be legal tender.

The notes will bear RBI Governor Urjit Patel's signature. -- ANI

JUST IN: Defending champions India beat Pakistan by 17 runs to win Women's Asia Cup T20 in Bangkok.

Mithali Raj's unbeaten 73 and balanced bowling from Jhulan Goswami, Ekta Bisht and Preeti Bose helped India win the title.

This is the fourth time the Indian women have defeated Pakistan to win the title, Hindustan Times reported. The last time they did it was in 2012 in Guangzhou.

13:23   Rs 71 lakh in new currency seized in Karnataka
Close on the heels of I-T sleuths confiscating over Rs 5 crore in Bengaluru, another Rs 71 lakh have been seized from the possession of three persons in Rs 2,000 denomination near in Udupi, Karnataka, police said on Sunday.

"Rs 71 lakh was seized from three persons who were arrested for carrying new Rs 2,000 notes in their car without any documents at Bailoor village," Udupi Superintendent of Police K T Balakrishna said adding the police swung into action on a tip-off.

Bailoor village is about 32km from Udupi.

The three have been handed over to the Income Tax officials in Mangaluru for further investigation, he said.

Police intercepted the car on December 1 and found the currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination totalling to Rs 71 lakh in a bag.

The three occupants, Imran Hussain, Asif Umar and Deepak Shetty (driver), had failed to produce appropriate documents or provide explanation about the cash, Balakrishna said.

They were travelling from Mangaluru to Kudremukh for a business payment, he said.

Over 50 I-T sleuths and police personnel had searched premises in Bengaluru, Chennai and Erode (Tamil Nadu) as part of the country-wide operations, with the Department saying the seizure of cash in new currency was over Rs 5 crore.

Speaking at the Hear of Asia Conference in Amritsar, Aghanistan President Ashraf Ghani said India's help comes with no strings attached and Afghanistan's ties with India are powerful.

He said Heart of Asia is meeting at time of great opportunity in significant threats for Afghanistan for Asia-wide and global implications.

He said India's support to Afghanistan aimed at improving people's life and is transparent.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also present at the conference.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is co-chairing the Heart of Asia Conference in the absence of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Jaitley welcomed the delegates. Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh is accompanying him.

Speaking before Ghani, Afghan Foreign Minsiter Salauddin Rabbani, at the inauguration of the summit, said there much that needs to be done to tackle challenges like terrorism and radicalism.

He stressed on greater India-Afghanistan ties and also stated how India has helped build Afghanistan Parliament and the Salma Dam, known as Afghan-Indian Friendship Dam.

11:25   Rajinikanth injured during shoot of '2.0'
Tamil film superstar Rajinikanth has sustained a minor leg injury after he allegedly fell while shooting his upcoming magnum opus "2.0" in Chennai. 

However, the 66-year-old actor resumed shooting after receiving treatment, sources said. 

Rajinikanth, who was shooting for a particular scene at Kelambakkam, allegedly fell and injured his knee last night, sources said, adding after being administered first aid at a private hospital, the star resumed work for his film. 

Meanwhile, his media manager said the actor was "fine" and has shared the video of Rajinikanth on a social media site.

11:20   Assam Rifles jawan, injured in ambush, dies
An Assam Rifles jawan, who was injured when militants ambushed a convoy near Wakka in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. 

One soldier was killed while nine others were injured when militants ambushed the convoy of the 16 Assam Rifles stationed in the district near Wakka at around 1.45 pm on Saturday. The attack took place 20 km from Indo-Myanmar border.

Unconfirmed reports from Longding said the ambush was carried out jointly by National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang and ULFA (Independent) cadres.

11:12   Heart of Asia set to find ways to shape Afghanistan's future
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani will jointly inaugurate the sixth Heart of Asia Ministerial Conference in Amritsar on Sunday. 

The conference will discuss peace, cooperation and economic development in Afghanistan. The theme for this year's conference is 'Addressing Challenges, Achieving Prosperity'. 

At the Ministerial Conference, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will lead the Indian delegation in place of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who is unwell. 

During today's proceedings at the conference, India is likely to step up its efforts to corner Pakistan diplomatically by mobilising support for concrete action against state-sponsored terrorism.

Heart of Asia process was launched in 2011 from Istanbul. Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the event in Amritsar. Eleven Companies of paramilitary forces and more than five thousand policemen have been deployed in the city to ensure smooth conduct of the conference.

10:41   Heavy fog engulfs Delhi;;nine flights delayed, 54 trains running late
Several flights and trains were delayed on Sunday as heavy smog continued to envelop New Delhi and outskirts making visibility almost minimal and bringing the morning traffic to a sluggish pace.

According to a ANI report, at least 54 trains to and from Delhi have been running late whereas 12 have been rescheduled. Eleven trains have been cancelled due to poor visibility. 

On the other hand, four international and five domestic flights have been delayed due to the poor visibility and one Delhi-Hyderabad flight was cancelled. 

The Meteorological Department predicted that the weather will worsen while Airport officials have said that they are well prepared to tackle the situation.

On Saturday, at least 13 trains were cancelled whereas 40 trains were rescheduled due to foggy conditions in Delhi and National Capital Region. In addition, nine international and four domestic flights from Delhi were also delayed due to the dense fog.

09:53   Rs 13860 cr money trail: Police protection for Shah's family
Family of Mahesh Shah, the Gujarat businessman who had gone missing after he disclosed Rs 13,860 crore under Centre's Income Disclosure Scheme, has been given police protection.

Shah had appeared before the media on Saturday and claimed that he had made the disclosure at behest of some people in the greed for commission.

"It is not my money. The money belongs various people including politicians, babus and builders,'' he told ETV Gujarati channel.

Later police and I-T officials arrived at the channel's office and detained him.

Though much is not known about Shah's income, sources in the Income Tax department claim he may have had real estate investments in Gujarat, Maharashtra and South India.

09:27   32 killed in coal mine blast in China
At least 32 people have been declared dead after an explosion at a coal mine in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The explosion took place yesterday at Baoma Mining Co Ltd in Yuanbaoshan district in the city of Chifeng, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. 

There were a total of 181 people working underground at the time of the accident, and 149 workers managed to get above ground, it said. 

So far 268 policemen and 119 rescuers and medical staff have been rushed to the accident site. 

This is the second big mine accident in China this week.

08:58   National-level shooter says 'coach' spiked drink, raped her
A national-level shooter has alleged that her coach spiked her soft drink and raped her, ANI reports. 

Police have filed an FIR against the accused.

In her complaint, the woman said that she has known the accused for over two years as they used to practise together.

The woman said that she has been training for the national championships at the shooting range of the Sports Authority of India and the accused, who had competed in international events, used to guide her.

According to a Times of India report, the shooter said that the accused recently visited her at her residence in Chanakyapuri on her birthday and allegedly offered her a cold drink spiked with sedatives. When she fell unconscious after having the drink, he allegedly raped her.

Army Chief Dalbir Singh, Navy Chief Sunil Lanba and IAF Chief Arup Raha on Sunday paid tributes at the Amar Jawan Jyoti in New Delhi on the occasion of Navy Day.

Navy Day is observed every year to commemorate India's victory in the India-Pakistan war in 1971 when missile boats of the Indian Navy carried out a deadly attack on Karachi Harbour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted to Twitter, "Navy Day greetings to all navy personnel & their families. We cherish the vital role of the navy & salute the bravery of our navy personnel."
