UN chief Ban Ki-moon has said that nations must work together for early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, underlining the "catastrophic risks" posed by atomic weapons to environmental security and human existence.

"On this International Day against Nuclear Tests, I call on the world to summon a sense of solidarity commensurate with the urgent need to end the dangerous impasse on this issue," the Secretary General said in his message marking the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
He lamented that since its adoption 20 years ago by the General Assembly, the multilateral treaty has yet to enter into force.
The CTBT is a multilateral treaty that bans all nuclear explosions, for both civilian and military purposes, in all environments. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on September 10, 1996 but has not entered into force as eight specific states have not yet ratified the treaty.
