This years Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award will be conferred on Shuttler P V Sindhu, Gymnast Dipa Karmakar, Shooter Jitu Rai and Wrestler Sakshi Malik for their performance in Rio Olympics.

While Sindhu and Malik were sure to get the award as they won medals in the Olympics, the names of Rai and Karmakar were recommended by the awards committee to the sports ministry.

This would be the first time in the history of this award that it will be conferred on four sportspersons simultaneously.

According to a special rule, in an Olympic year, more than one sports personality can be given the Khel Ratna award.

Arjuna Awards 2016 will be conferred on 15 sportspersons, including cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, long-distance runner Lalita Babar, boxer Shiva Thapa and shooter Apurvi Chandela.
