A Dalit truck driver hailing from Gujarat became a victim of the cow vigilantism sweeping through parts of the country when he jumped into a river in Madhya Pradesh to escape Bajrang Dal activists and drowned. Mani Lal Parmar had accidentally hit three stray cows while driving along the river Barna's banks in Raisen district, some 65km from Bhopal.

As local Bajrang Dal activists came looking for him, Mani Lal jumped into the river along with the truck's cleaner, Mohsin, who has lived to tell the tale. The incident took place on Thursday night - 48 hours before the Prime Minister started speaking out against cow vigilantism that has been claiming lives for nearly a year now. Mani Lal's body was found this afternoon at Pipliya Ghat on the Barna.
