23:25   Punjab SP in news during Pathakot attack now booked for harassment
Controversial Punjab Police officer Salwinder Singh was today booked for allegedly sexually harassing five women personnel of the force, police said.

Police teams have been dispatched to various places to nab Singh, who is on the run, they said.

Earlier, the sexual harassment committee of Punjab Police had summoned him to respond to the allegations levelled against him by five policewomen, police said.

Singh, a Superintendent of Police rank officer, has been asked to appear tomorrow before Inspector General Gurpreet Deo, who heads the committee, police said.

He was summoned after the alleged victims, who deposed before the committee last month and submitted a signed statement listing their allegations, stood by their complaint, police said.

Singh was mired in a controversy over the terrorist attack at Pathankot air base. He and two others were claimed to have been abducted by the Pakistani terrorists, who used their mobile phones to contact their families and handlers in that country. They had also snatched the vehicle Singh was travelling in.

23:09   Mann video: Parliament panel revisits spots filmed by AAP MP
The Lok Sabha panel, looking into the issue of Bhagwant Mann's Parliament video, revisited the spots videographed by the AAP MP to ascertain if there was any loophole in security apparatus today.

Starting from the first barricade at Vijay Chowk, four panel members, led by its chairman Kirit Somaiya, and officials of Parliament security and Delhi Police, inspected various security spots and held discussions with the personnel deployed there.

"We reconstructed the entire route filmed by Mann... We checked every chowk and spot, covering each barricade before entering Parliament and asked the security men deployed there how they missed the video being shot," Somaiaya said.

He said the committee will again meet next week and discuss how to tighten the security apparatus.

"The Committee will sit next week for three days starting Tuesday to ascertain if there is need to improve the systems and strengthen the security following its breach due to the videography. Suggestions from staff will also be sought and the issue will be discussed with top police officials and security experts," he said.

22:13   Obama declares himself a 'feminist'
In a birthday editorial today, US President Barack Obama described himself as a feminist and urged renewed effort to break down gender stereotypes.

The father of two girls, who was raised by a single mother, penned an essay for Glamour magazine, declaring "this is an extraordinary time to be a woman."

"I say that not just as President but also as a feminist."

Listing strides made by women, from gaining the vote to cracking open previously off-bounds careers, Obama said "the most important change may be the toughest of all -- and that's changing ourselves."

He said raising Sasha, 15, and Malia, 18, had opened his eyes to the pressure girls are under.

"You see the subtle and not-so-subtle social cues transmitted through culture. You feel the enormous pressure girls are under to look and behave and even think a certain way."

"We need to keep changing the attitude that raises our girls to be demure and our boys to be assertive, that criticizes our daughters for speaking out and our sons for shedding a tear," he wrote.

As Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chndrababu Naidu arrived in Delhi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today expressed hope that a satisfactory solution would be found to the state's demand for special status as several decisions have been taken and some are in the pipeline.

"I said (few days back) that we are fully conscious of the fact that justice has to be done to Andhra Pradesh because Andhra Pradesh has lost out as far as division is concerned and there are several set of decisions which we have already taken," Jaitley said in the Lok Sabha.

"Some are in the pipeline which we are taking, some matters we are in active discussion to find out a solution to the problem. 21:58   Elected govt doesn't mean rulers: Jung
Terming the Delhi High Court verdict as "historic", Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung said today, "When we get elected, it doesn't mean we are rulers and instead we will have to work and confine ourselves to our roles and jobs which are in the framework of the Constitution".

Jung's remarks came hours after the Delhi High Court held that the LG is the administrative head of the National Capital Territory and the AAP government's contention that he is bound to act on the advice of the Council of Ministers was "without substance".

He said that today's judgment of the Delhi High Court is a "historic" and in view of this, he has come out to address his first press conference in the last three years.

"When we get elected, we are not rulers of this country. You, me and nobody is the ruler. We will have to work and confine ourselves to our works and jobs which are in the framework of the Constitution," Jung told reporters.

Asked why he did not speak to media when AAP leaders, including the CM, "attacked" him on several issues, the Lt Governor quoted an Urdu couplet -- "Waqt aane pe bata denge tujhe aye aasman, Hum abhi se kya batayen kya hamare dil mein." (When the time comes, we shall show thee, O heaven/For why should we tell thee now, what lurks in our hearts?)

21:08   Kejriwal should seek fresh mandate: BJP after HC verdict
The BJP today asked Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to seek a fresh mandate in Delhi, saying his government has "no moral right" to continue after the high court declared severals of its orders "illegal" and ruled that the Lt Governor was the city's administrative head.

Taunting Kejriwal over his ongoing 'vipassana' course during which he keeps away from public eye, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said he deliberately went for the exercise now as as he knew that the verdict was due today and the court was to rule against his "illegal and unconstitutional" moves.

"AAP has received slap on its face from the legal system. It had been misleading people of Delhi and doing this drama that the Centre was not allowing its government (to function). They are very cunning people. Kejriwal knew that such a verdict was coming today and he went into hiding in the name of 'vipassana'.

"A man who worships power and comments on all issues under the Sun is keeping away on the pretext of 'vipassana'. Knowing everything, he took unconstitutional and illegal decisions. He should face the people again. This government has no moral right to continue," Patra told reporters.

19:51   Punjab govt bans screening of 'The Legend of Michael Mishra'
The Punjab government today banned the screening of Hindi film 'The Legend of Michael Mishra' for two months with immediate effect after "resentment" voiced by the members of a Dalit community over the way sage Valmiki was portrayed in it.

"During such suspension, it shall be deemed to be an uncertified film in the state," said an official spokesman.

The decision was taken on account of "strong resentment" among the Valmiki community regarding certain references to Maharishi Valmiki in the film, he added.

"The decision is aimed at keeping intact the hard-earned peace and social harmony of the state as the screening of the film may trigger massive protests," he said.

The film, written and directed by Manish Jha and starring Arshad Warsi, Aditi Rao Hydari and Boman Irani, is slated to release on screens tomorrow.

19:31   Pak's conduct during Rajnath visit childish, says Omar
Former J-K CM Omar Abdullah reacts to Home Minister Rajnath Singh's visit to Islamabad for the SAARC summit. "I've been a strong supporter of Indo-Pak engagement but Pakistan's conduct during @rajnathsingh-ji's visit was childish at best."

The current strain in Indo-Pak relations was apparently evident when Home Minister Rajnath Singh came face-to-face with his Pakistani counterpart Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan for the first time on Thursday and the two leaders barely shook hands. The two leaders barely touched their hands, not even a formal handshake, before Singh moved ahead to enter the meeting hall.

Members of the Indian media, which came from New Delhi to report the conference, were not allowed to capture the moment or the conference and was kept at a distance by Pakistani officials, leading to a verbal duel between a senior Indian official and a Pakistani official.

The only broadcaster allowed inside the venue was state-owned Pakistan Television, the reports said.

However, India described the reports of a 'blackout' as "misleading". "With reference to the home ministers meeting in Islamabad earlier, media reports of a 'blackout' of our home minister's statement are misleading. "It is the standard SAARC practice that the opening statement by the host country is public and open to the media while the rest of the proceedings are in camera, which allows for a full and frank discussion of issues," a government source said.

In Islamabad, an interior ministry official also said that there was no such blackout of Rajnath's speech as none of the speeches of participating ministers was shown.

"It is true that his (Rajnath's) speech was not shown live because (the) speech(es) of none of the participating ministers was shown live by the state media."

He said only the inaugural session was shown live when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan made welcome speeches. The official said Singh was not discriminated at all by the state media and he was given full official protocol. The home minister also skipped the lunch being hosted by Khan after the meeting as the host had left the venue.

Speaking in Hindi at the conference, Singh said there should be "strongest action not only against terrorists or organisations but also against those individuals, organisations and nations who support terrorism." "It also needs to be ensured that terrorism is not glorified and is not patronized by any state," Singh said in a veiled dig at Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Singh's comments came against the backdrop of Sharif's praise of Burhan Wani who was killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir on July 8 and his description of Hizbul Mujahideen commander as a martyr, much to India's ire.

19:23   AAP govt to move SC, lashes out at Jung
With the High Court ruling against it in the turf battle with Delhi Lt Governor, AAP government today said it will challenge the order in the Supreme Court and questioned why the Constitution was amended to have a legislative assembly if the city was to be run by the LG.

"We respectfully disagree with the High Court verdict," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, adding there was a "big difference" between any other Union Territory and the national capital and alleged that on the "pretext of rules", various decisions aimed at curbing corruption have been stalled. "The High Court says Delhi is merely an Union Territory. If as per Constitution Delhi is only an UT, then why was it amended to make Delhi an UT with legislature.

18:14   At Rs 15 crore, Mukesh Ambani's salary, unchanged for 8 years
Reliance Industries' Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani kept his annual salary capped at Rs 15 crore for the eighth year in a row even as the remuneration of all executive directors on firm's board rose.

Ambani, the richest Indian, has kept salary, perquisites and allowances and commission at Rs 15 crore since 2008-09, foregoing almost Rs 24 crore per annum.

"The Chairman and Managing Director's compensation has been set at Rs 15 crore as against Rs 38.75 crore as approved, reflecting his desire to continue to set a personal example for moderation in managerial compensation levels," RIL said in its annual report for 2015-16.

His remuneration for 2015-16 included Rs 4.16 crore as salary and another Rs 60 lakh by way of prequisites and allowances. He got retirement benefits of Rs 71 lakh and Rs 9.53 crore as commission on profit. While the base salary is the same as the previous year, the commission on profit has marginally risen from Rs 9.41 crore in 2014-15.

Ambani voluntarily capped his compensation at Rs 15 crore in October 2009 amid a debate over right-sizing of CEO salaries.

The salary cap continued even as all other executive directors saw their remunerations go up. Ambani's cousins Nikhil R Meswani and Hital R Meswani saw their compensation rise to Rs 14.42 crore and Rs 14.41 crore, respectively. They had in the previous year got Rs 12.03 crore.

17:52   Saudi will send stranded Indians at its own expense: Sushma's diplomatic coup
In a diplomatic victory for India, Saudi Arabia has agreed to give exit visas to hundreds of jobless Indian workers there and will send them back home at its own expense.

Making a suo motu statement in Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Saudi Arabia has also agreed to provide free medical facility and food to the Indian workers stranded in camps and also allow those eligible to seek re-employment with other companies.

She said her deputy and Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh was camping in Saudi Arabia since Tuesday evening and will return after formalising the arrangements for the Indian workers.

"I am happy to inform that the Saudi ruler has taken note of the plight of Indian workers... Saudi King has instructed the officials to resolve the issue in two days," she said.

Saudi Arabia, Swaraj said, has agreed to the Indian government's request to grant exit visas to the stranded worker. It has also offered to transport the workers to India.

"Government of India will not have to spend a penny on that," she said. The Islamic nation has also permitted workers to take re-employment if other companies find them suitable, she said, adding that before departing, the Indian workers will register their claims of unpaid salaries and other dues with the Labour Office of Saudi Arabia.Indian Embassy in Riyadh will follow up with the Labour Office of Saudi Arabia to get all the dues of workers cleared, she said.

The Minister said the Saudi ruler has also issued orders to provide free medical and food to Indian workers lodged in the camps apart from all civic amenities.

Thanking the Saudi ruler, she said this was possible because of the personal and diplomatic relationship stuck by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Islamic nation. Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad complimented the Indian and the Saudi governments for reaching a solution on the issue.

16:48   Pakistan model of democracy, says Venkaiah on HM's speech blackout
I&B minister Venkaiah Naidu reacts to Pakistan blacking out Home Minister Rajnath Singh's speech on terror at the SAARC meeting in Islamabad. "It's the Pakistan model of democracy," says Naidu. "Sadan chal raha hai, sadan mein batayenge. The Parliament is in session, will bring it up there," he said.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singhs speech at SAARC conference was reportedly blacked out, according to ANI. Apparently, no media personnel were allowed to cover Singhs speech. Only Pakistan state PTV was allowed to cover introductory speeches of Pakistan PM and the Interior Minister. Even private Pakistan media was not allowed inside.

Meanwhile, both Rajnath Singh and his counterpart Chaudhary Nisar, who was the host at the SAARC conference lunch, did not attend the lunch. There is however no confirmation on this development.

Just in: A Delhi Court sentences film maker Mahmood Farooqui to 7 years imprisonment for raping an American woman. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000. If the fine is not furnished, then a three month-sentence will be added to the seven-year sentence.

A Delhi court on Saturday had convicted the 'Peepli Live' co-director of raping a 30-year-old United States researcher last year.

Farooqui, who was out on bail, was taken into custody immediately after the pronouncement of the judgement.

Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain held Farooqui guilty of offence under section 376 (punishment of rape) of the IPC.

The court fixed the matter for hearing arguments on sentence on August 2.

The offence of rape entails a minimum of seven years rigorous jail and a maximum of imprisonment for life.

The woman, in her complaint, had alleged that Farooqui was drunk when he raped her at his house where she had gone to get his help for her research work last year.

The police had on June 19, 2015, lodged the FIR against Farooqui on the woman's complaint after which he was arrested.

The police had on July 29 last year filed a charge sheet against Farooqui alleging that he had raped the research scholar from Colombia University at his Sukhdev Vihar house in south Delhi on March 28 last year.

The court had on September 9, 2015, started the trial in the case after framing rape charge against Farooqui.

13:12   Govt sets April 2017 for GST deadline
A day after the Rajya Sabha passed an amendment to the Constitution enabling the passage of GST, the finance ministry has announced an April 2017 deadline for the uniform taxation system.

Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said his target was for the necessary majority of states to ratify the constitutional change in next 30 days, allowing a new GST Council to finalise legislations that will set the rate and other terms of the tax.

Adhia also told a news conference that it would be "premature" to expect the GST's standard rate to be 18 percent, as proposed by the government's own chief economic adviser, saying this would imply significant revenue losses.

Most revenues came from excise duty and value-added tax whose standard rates, taken together, add up to a tax burden of 27 percent for businesses selling goods. -- Reuters

12:48   Leander refuses to room with Bopanna in Olympic Village
With just two days to go for the 2016 Rio Olympics, CNN-News18 has learnt that tennis player Rohan Bopanna, who is to pair with Leander Paes in the men's doubles event, is forced to train with others because Leander has yet to arrive in Rio de Janeiro.

Paes, according to sources, has informed the Indian Olympic Association that he doesn't wish to share a flat with Bopanna at the Olympic Village.

The two reportedly don't share any camaraderie, especially since Bopanna announced Saketh Myneni as his doubles partner, before the All Indian Tennis Association (AITA) ruled in favour of Leander.

It must be noted that Sania Mirza too ignored Paes, who will play his seventh Olympics, as her mixed doubles partner and picked Bopanna.

Paes aside, the entire Indian contingent arrived in Rio on August 1 to begin their preparations for the Games beginning on Thursday.

When contacted, Leander's father Vece Paes, a former Olympic medal winner himself in hockey, came out in his son's defence. "Leander is en route to Rio and is reaching this evening," he said.

The senior Paes also suggested that Leander is only late by half a day, in line with what was decided by the team during last month's Davis Cup tie in Chandigarh.

12:12   Laptop, laptop! Indian passengers on Emirates flight endangered lives for luggage
When the Dubai bound Thiruvananthapuram Emirates flight crash-landed at the Dubai airport and goint up in flames minutes later, the first thought going on in the minds of the passengers on board was escape and evacuation, but their hand luggage.

Amateur video recordings inside the plane in the immediate aftermath of the crash show passengers trying to pull out their bags from overhead bins despite the emergency.

An NDTV report says that a passenger can be heard shouting, "Laptop, laptop," while other passengers reach for their luggage, ignoring the pleas from the crew to use the slide and flee. There were nearly 300 people on board, most of them from Kerala since the flight took off from Thiruvananthapuram.

"Chute, chute, chute," a flight attendant shouts. "Jump the slide, jump the slide," she urges asking passengers to forget their bags.

The passengers held up the process of evacuation by taking their bags out of the overhead luggage compartments.

The video shows fire near one of the engines shortly before the aircraft burst into flames.

No passengers died and only 10 were slightly injured, but a firefighter was killed when the flames spread, and he has been hailed a hero for saving countless lives.

The cause of the crash is not known. The plane had apparently aborted the landing and had been about to go-around for another landing when it crashed on the runway, wheels up.

11:30   LG is administrative head of Delhi, AAP loses plea on 'who's boss'
The Delhi High Court has dismissed the petition filed by the Aam Aadmi Party challenging the powers of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. Kejriwal, who took power last year after winning the Delhi election with a spectacular mandate, accused the Centre of trying to run the capital through Jung.

In the battle for control of Delhi, Kejriwal has even targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP, accusing them of trying to govern Delhi despite losing the election.

The Delhi HC said that the LG is the administrative head of the National Capital Territory. "AAP govt's contention that LG is bound to act on advice of Council of Ministers is without any substance and cannot be accepted."

The HC said the May 21, 2015, notification of the Centre barring ACB from proceeding against Central Govt employees is neither illegal nor unsustainable.

"Service matters fall outside the jurisdiction of Delhi Legislative Assembly and LG exercising the powers is not unconstitutional," the HC ruled.

The HC holds as illegal AAP govt's order appointing Commission of Inquiry in the CNG fitness scam and DDCA scam since the same was issued without concurrence of LG.

The AAP govt's counsel in HC says they will immediately file an appeal against the verdict.

11:30   500 arrested as police seeks to end protests in Valley
In a bid to end street protests, police have launched a massive crackdown against "hooligans and miscreants" in Kashmir and arrested nearly 500 youth from across the Valley.

"In its continuous drive against hooligans and miscreants, 349 accused persons have been arrested in the Valley," a police spokesman said.

The spokesman said 122 persons have been detained under "prohibitory provisions of law".

More than 50 persons have been killed, including two policemen, and nearly 6000 others injured in the ongoing street protests in Kashmir since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani and his two associates in an encounter with security forces on July 8.

Initially, the authorities imposed curfew across the Valley to curb the protests but the strategy failed as more and more people took to the streets.

A senior police official said the security agencies are using video footage and photographs to pinpoint the "trouble mongers and instigators" among the protestors. "We have deployed some personnel in uniform equipped with cameras for recording the incidents of stone pelting and pinpoint those instigating the protests during the analysis of the footage available," the official said.

The Coast Guard, National Disaster Response Force and Navy began combing the river early in the morning, looking for signs of the vehicles. Two bodies were recovered by Wednesday afternoon, but authorities estimate around 30 people are still missing.

Instead of shutting the 88-year-old bridge on Mumbai-Goa highway down after receiving a letter from the United Kingdom government, 3 years ago, on its life coming to an end, Public Works Department erected crash barriers.

02:45   ISIS announces new Boko Haram leader
Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamic extremists have a new leader who promises to end attacks on mosques and markets used by Muslims, according to an interview published Wednesday by the Islamic State group.

The group's al-Nabaa newspaper identified Abu Musab al-Barnawi as the new "Wali" of its West Africa Province, a title previously used to describe long-time leader Abubakar Shekau.

The report did not say what Shekau's current status is.

The interview with al-Barnawi indicates a major change in strategy for the Nigerian extremists, who have attacked mosques with suicide bombers and gunmen, blown up suicide bombers in crowded marketplaces and killed and kidnapped school children. The targeting of students accounts for its nickname Boko Haram, which means Western education is sinful or forbidden.

02:14   Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City to shut down
The Trump Taj Mahal casino will shut down after Labor Day, the victim of the longest strike in Atlantic City's 38-year casino era.

The closure of the casino opened by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump but now owned by his friend and fellow billionaire Carl Icahn will cost about 3,000 workers their jobs, and reduce the number of casinos in Atlantic City to seven.

Those job losses will be in addition to 8,000 workers who lost their jobs when four Atlantic City casinos closed in 2014.

And the bloodletting may not be over yet: Voters will decide in November whether to permit two new casinos in northern New Jersey just outside New York City, a development that would likely lead to additional casino closures in Atlantic City.

Tony Rodio, president of Tropicana Entertainment, which runs the Taj Mahal, said management decided today it can no longer operate a money-losing property in the midst of a strike.

The head of the largest city police department in America on Wednesday joined a growing list of people calling Donald Trump unfit to lead, saying the Republican mogul "scares the hell" out of him.

"Mr Trump scares me, scares the hell out of me to be quite frank with you," New York police commissioner Bill Bratton told CBS News a day after announcing that he would retire in September.

Bratton, who has spent 45 years in public service, said he did not "get" why the Republican nominee, whose home he has visited, commanded so much support.

"I'm amazed that veterans groups are so charmed by him," said the outgoing police chief, who himself served in Vietnam. "I've just watched this whole campaign and I just shake my head."

00:36   US sent cash to Iran as Americans were freed
Wall Street Journal reports: The Obama administration secretly organized an airlift of $400 million worth of cash to Iran that coincided with the January release of four Americans detained in Tehran, according to U.S. and European officials and congressional staff briefed on the operation afterward.

Wooden pallets stacked with euros, Swiss francs and other currencies were flown into Iran on an unmarked cargo plane, according to these officials. The US procured the money from the central banks of the Netherlands and Switzerland, they said.

The money represented the first installment of a $1.7 billion settlement the Obama administration reached with Iran to resolve a decades-old dispute over a failed arms deal signed just before the 1979 fall of Irans last monarch, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

00:26   Trump says no to Paul Ryan, his VP pick says yes
Donald Trump's White House campaign was in turmoil on Wednesday after he angered senior Republican Party leaders by criticizing a dead soldier's family and refusing to back the re-election campaign of House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan.

On Tuesday, Trump denied both Speaker Ryan and Senator John McCain support in their coming primary contests, hitting back at critics in the Republican leadership who have taken him to task for his insistent public dispute with the parents of the soldier, a Muslim U.S. Army captain killed in the Iraq war.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus was furious over the failure to endorse Ryan, who is the most senior elected Republican, and over Trump's feud with the Khan family, two Republican sources said.

"He feels like a fool," a Republican source familiar with the situation said of Priebus.

00:22   Obama makes mass commutation of 214 offenders
US President Barack Obama today commuted the sentences of 214 drug offenders, the single biggest act of presidential clemency in over a century.

The White House said Obama had forgiven a fresh group of prisoners, including 67 who had been serving life sentences.

Most were guilty of non-violent crimes, many involving possession or distribution of crack cocaine.

The actions "represent the most grants in a single day since at least 1900," said Neil Eggleston, the White House counsel to the president.

Obama has now made 562 commutations, "more commutations than the previous nine presidents combined," Eggleston said.

The move is part of Obama's effort to push ahead with criminal justice reform.

The United States currently has among the world's highest incarceration rates and puts a disproportionate number of black and Hispanic Americans behind bars. One often cited reason are mandatory sentencing laws for the use of crack that are tougher than those for cocaine.
