The controversial "cow census" has started in West Bengal with volunteers of the BJP-backed cow protection cell seeking information about cattle farming and dairy farming, the president of the outfit claimed.

The first phase started yesterday and would continue till the first week of September. The second phase would be undertaken after the Bakri Eid in September, Gupta said.

"We are facing resistance from certain quarters of the administration. Yesterday, we went to Duttapukar for the census but after some time we started receiving calls from the Duttapukur Police Station demanding to know why we had come there. I told the police officials that India is a free country and we are free to go anywhere we want," he said.

Declining to reveal the procedure being adopted to conduct the cow census, Gupta said, "The procedure that is being adopted to conduct the cow census will not be revealed. We will maintain transparency and will come out with our findings on September 15."
