The Gujarat government today declared a 10% reservation in government jobs and higher education institutions in the state for the economically-backward class from all non-reserved castes.

The new quota will be in addition to the existing 49% reservation for Schedules Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC)

Fridays announcement came nine months after the politically and economically influential Patidars, staunch supporters of the ruling BJP, began an agitation for reservation under the OBC category.

The quota benefits will be available to the members of all the upper caste communities, including Patidars, Brahmins, Kshtriyas and Lohana among others, with annual income less than Rs 6 lakh.

The Gujarat government will bring out an ordinance in this regard on May 1, the foundation day of the state.
