22:19   Take steps to bring back antiquities taken outside India: Par panel to Centre
A Parliamentary panel today asked the Culture Ministry to take necessary steps to recover antiquities sold abroad and bring back artifacts that were taken outside the country during the colonial rule through diplomatic dialogues and appropriate legal mechanisms.

The Public Accounts Committee, headed by Congress MP K V Thomas, in its report on 'Protection and Conservation of Monuments and Antiquities' expressed "displeasure over the absence of an appropriate and effective mechanism" for acquisition of anitquities in the country so far and also delay in bringing about amendments to the Antiquities and Art Treasure Act 1972.

The panel's observations assume significance in the backdrop of recent developments triggering a fresh debate over bringing back the iconic Kohinoor diamond from England.

"The Committee note with serious concern that the Ministry is yet to bring amendments to the Act even after a lapse of nearly two decades, though the process to amend the Act was initiated in 1997," it said. "The Committee, therefore, desire that the ministry expedite the finalization of the draft Antiquities and Art Treasure Amendment Bill," it said.

The Public Accounts Committee also noted "lack of effective monitoring in removing" of encroachments and "absence of any coordinated effort" to check unauthorised constructions within conservation areas.

21:14   Would love to see woman prez but Hillary is wrong person, says Trump
Controversial Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump today said he would "love" to see a woman as president of the US but Democratic White House hopeful Hillary Clinton is "wrong person" for this top position.
"I would love to see a woman president, but she is the wrong person," Trump, 69, told "Fox and Friends".
After three months of primary election season, political pundits now increasingly believe the November presidential elections is headed for a clash between Trump and Clinton.

"I would have women. I would have the most capable people on my cabinet. But I would certainly have women. I would love to see a woman president but she is the wrong person. She is a disaster. Remember the famous call at 3 o'clock in the morning? She was sleeping, OK? She was sleeping. You know, it was her ad. Who would you like at 3 o'clock in the morning? Well, the phone rang and she was sleeping," Trump said.
"She would be a terrible president. And the only thing she has got to play - she has got nothing else to play. She is guilty as hell in the e-mails. You have got Whitewater. Her whole life has been crooked.
"And you look at the foundation, the whole life. And the only card she has got is to play the woman card. And it may be good enough. Now a poll came out yesterday where I was essentially even with her and I have not focused on her yet," Trump added.

20:46   Won't allow pvt schools to hike fees and buy Mercedes: Sisodia
Private schools may decide on fees but should spend them only on development of institutes only and not for "buying Mercedes" or expanding their "teaching shop empire," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today warned.
The Delhi Education Minister said he has an "objection" if education is made into a "teaching shop".
"My concern about private schools where fees are high is whatever amount you take from students should be spent on the same school. Then I don't have a problem. If you are spending the money on the same school, then I am not bothered about how much you are charge.
"But if you charge students and then buy your Mercedes cars or built luxurious homes... and spread your empire in different states and cities, then what mistake have these students done? Don't do this by using the fees of these students, use some other source of income.
"Whatever money you take from students, spend it on the same school and then charge how much fees you want. But I have an objection if the money goes out of the school. Because education is not a teaching shop. We will not allow this to happen and that's our commitment," Sisodia asserted.
He was responding to a question asked by a student over the high fees charged by private schools and quality of education in government schools at a function organised by Bharat Ahshara Social Organisation, an NGO working to build mohalla libraries and clinics.
Interestingly, the Delhi government had recently pulled up two private schools and ordered them to rollback the fee hike.
The private schools in the national capital have been asked to submit their proposals of fee hike to Department of Education for prior sanction latest by May 7.

15:34   Ramdev's 'ulta-asana': Beheading remark only a response to Owaisi
Yoga guru Ramdev did a U-turn today from his controversial remark that if not for the law, he would have "beheaded" people for refusing to chant 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', saying he was merely responding to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi's statement that he won't raise the slogan even if a knife is put to his throat.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Ramdev said insulting religions like Islam or Christianity would be as "idiotic" as Owaisi's remark.

"I believe in non-violence, coexistence and oneness. It would be wrong to say that behead me but I won't respect the Quran or the Bible. I take pride in my religion but that does not give me the licence to insult other faiths. That would be as idiotic as Owaisi. "He says at the drop of a hat that behead me but I won't say 'Bharat mata ki jai'. So I responded in rustic language that I would have done so but I believe in the Constitution. No one needs to be scared of me...'Woh toh baat ki baat thi'. If someone wants to say 'Bharat mata ki jai' then let him, what's the point in protesting against it," Ramdev said.

The yoga guru said JNU and NIT Srinagar incidents are "offshoots" of a crisis of ideology, principles and policy in the country. Asked about Amitabh Bachchan's name surfacing among the Indians listed in Panama Papers, Ramdev said the Bollywood megastar appeared to be a "good person" but he needs to come up-front and say that he is ready for a probe into the matter.

Answering a range of questions, Ramdev also said he does not have any role in the political turmoil in Uttarakhand.

On the black money issue, on which he had been vocal in the past, Ramdev said he has left the issue to "Modi ji" to handle. "I have my full focus on Yoga," he said. Ramdev also praised the anti-pollution measure 'odd-even' enforced by the AAP government and the liquor ban imposed by the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar, saying other political parties should follow suit.

15:04   Midnight knock at minister's home leaves MPs guessing
MPs in the Central Hall of Parliament were whispering about two people who made a midnight visit to a Union Minister in New Delhi yesterday. The two, MPs said, drove up in a white car -- one seated in the front, one at the back. The person in the front seat was a sitting Rajya Sabha MP and the one at the back seat was a former UPA minister. As MPs speculated on the purpose of the visit, the AugustaWestland Helicopter deal came up. Some MPs said it was more prosaic -- an invite to the wedding reception of a former Union Minister being held in June in Mumbai.  But why the midnight knock, we wonder?

14:47   Subramanian Swamy ruled Parliament today
Senior BJP leader Dr Subramanian Swamy was the main attraction in the Central Hall of Parliament today and was being  congratulated by MPs across parties after he took oath in the Rajya Sabha today.

Dr Swamy who is extremely active despite being 76 years old crisscrossed the Central Hall benches accepting greetings.

His quipped today that in the AugustaWestland helicopter deal, the law would catch up with 'ma-beta' and the duo would land in jail soon.  He also said that he has given notice in the Rajya Sabha for discussion on the chopper deal on Wednesday.

Congress MPs are likely to object since a nominated MP cannot give notices of public importance. But BJP has an answer to that -- Mani Shankar Aiyer -- also a nominated RS member used to create a ruckus on each and every occasion. Aiyar was made union minister after being nominated by the President and Dr Swamy may also fall in that category, quipped few BJP MPs.

14:09   Kangana, Hrithik's intimate picture leaked
A leaked picture of Hrihik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut has surfaced today and expectedly has been doing the rounds on social media.

In the picture, Hrithik is seen hugging Kangana in what appears to be an intimate moment.

Reports say that the picture was clicked at a party held just before Krrissh 3 went on the floors. While the veracity of the picture has not been established, the image could in fact have been morphed.

While Hrithik has claimed that he did not have an affair with Kangana and it was purely a figment of her imagination, the new leaked picture might be a little difficult to explain.

Hrithik and Kanganas very public spat hinges partly on a crucial point of contention emails, several of which have surfaced recently.

Kangana has alleged that Hrithik sent her multiple emails to which she responded, only to be told that they were directed to an impostor posing as the star. Kangana further went on to say that Hrithik has hacked into her account to delete a few emails, to avoid over- complicating his divorce proceedings with ex-wife Sussanne Khan.

13:37   SC allows Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre to stay in Italy till Sep 30
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre's stay outside India till September 30 since arbitration proceedings are underway.

The apex court had earlier extended liberty to Latorre to stay back in Italy till April 30.

The court asked the Centre to brief it about developments in international arbitration proceedings in the marines case.

Girone, the other accused, is still in India and Italy has been seeking his return as well.

The Supreme Court on July 13, 2015, had allowed Latorre to stay in Italy for another six months on medical grounds, after the government did not object to his plea.

The marines, who were on board ship Enrica Lexie, are accused of killing two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast on February 15, 2012 after mistaking them for pirates.

The Supreme Court which was handling the case suspended the court proceedings relating to the trial of two marines in August 2015 following an order to this effect by International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) which was approached by Italy for international arbitration.

12:36   Kashmir dominates Indo-Pak FS meeting
In their first formal bilateral meeting after Pathankot attack, Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan today held talks focusing on a range of sticky issues including probe into the strike and Kashmir, which Pakistani side asserted was the "core issue".

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry, in New Delhi to attend the Heart of Asia conference, met after which the Pakistani side said its Foreign Secretary "emphasised that Kashmir remains the core issue that requires a just solution in accordance with UNSC resolutions and wishes of Kashmiri people."

There was no immediate formal word from the Indian side on the meeting. Ahead of the meeting, the Indian officials had maintained that Pathankot attack and a possible visit by the NIA to Pakistan will be raised during the FS-level talks, which were deferred in January in the wake of the strike at the strategic air base at Pathankot.

"In line with our PM's vision of peaceful neighborhood, FS underscored Pakistan's commitment to have friendly relations with all its neighbors/India. All outstanding issues including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute were discussed," the Pakistan High Commission here said. India has been pressing for action against terrorists responsible for the audacious attack on the IAF base, to take the talks forward. This is also the first time the two foreign secretaries are meeting after the announcement of Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue(CBD) by the Foreign Ministers in Islamabad last December. The two secretaries had a informal brief interaction during a SAARC meeting in Nepal in March this year.

The efforts to resume CBD at the Foreign Secretary-level hit a deadlock after the Pathankot attack that India said was carried out by militants from Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM)terror group. Jaishankar was scheduled to travel to Islamabad to hold talks with Chaudhary on January 15 but both the countries had announced deferment of the talks with "mutual consent" in the wake of the Pathankot attack.

Todays's meeting came in the backdrop of Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit's recent comments that the bilateral peace process was suspended, evoking a sharp reaction by Indian side.
