Prime Minister Modi is addressing Panchayati Raj Sammelan on the Occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

Here are a few quotes from his ongoing speech:

  • Normally, Panchayati Raj Day is observed at Vigyaan Bhawan in New Delhi. We are trying to get out of the notion that Delhi is India. India is a big country. We're making efforts to organise various events for social development at places outside Delhi so that more people can be connected.
  • Mahatma Gandhi used to say 'Bharat gaaon mein basa hai' (India dwells in its villages) but we see that distance between urban and rural India is only increasing. Therefore for the first time, we have focused on rural development in our budget.
  • From this land of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, I have the opportunity to talk to people across India.
  • I want to congratulate the state governments that despite scorching heat, authorities went to villages to spread awareness on development.
  • People in villages have shown trust on me for 5 years. As their representative, I'm determined to do something for them.
  • So many women are serving in Panchayats. They can show tremendous leadership in matters affecting the villages. I request women representatives in villages to take a resolution to build toilets so that no mother or woman is forced to defecate in open.
  • The women representatives in Panchayats should ensure that there are adequate toilets in villages. It is such a shame that despite so much development, women and girls are forced to defecate in open in villages.
