Japan earthquake destroys 19 houses; people still trapped in buildings

At least 19 houses collapsed after an earthquake struck southern Japan late Thursday, the country's National Police Agency said. The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 6.2 quake struck near Ueki, Japan. 

Several smaller aftershocks occurred shortly afterward. At least 12 injuries were reported, the National Police Agency said. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said some people were still trapped under buildings Thursday night.

The latest quake was centred in Kumamoto prefecture at about 12.03 am (2033 IST today), the Japan Meteorological Agency announced, adding that there was no danger of a tsunami.
