1991 Pilibhit fake encounter: 47 cops get life imprisonment

Just in: 1991 Pilibhit Fake encounter case: All 47 convicted policemen sentenced to life imprisonment by Special CBI Court.

On July 12, 1991, the policemen stopped a luxury bus filled with Sikh pilgrims in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit and forced 10 passengers to get off. A chargesheet said they were divided into groups, taken to different areas in a jungle and killed in "cold blood."
 
Fifty-seven policemen were charged in the case, but 10 have died since.
 
The CBI investigated the case on the orders of the Supreme Court.
 
Awards for killing terrorists was said to be the motive behind the killings.
