When Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads to the US later this week, expect pomp, patriotic moments, and plenty of selfies. Modi's visit will be his 16th trip abroad as leader of the South Asian nation, enough to develop a foreign-visit formula, aimed at wowing his host country, engaging with the diaspora and attracting investment to India.

The leader will spend two days in California, arriving on September 26 after addressing the United Nations in New York and will be the first Indian prime minister in more than three decades to visit California after Indira Gandhi made a trip to Los Angeles in 1982.
