23:31   Apple speeds up Electric-Car Work
Apple has put more weight behind its electric car efforts and has set a target shipment date of 2019, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing sources.

The tech giant has called the car initiative, named "Titan" within the company, a "committed project" and has met with California officials in determining the feasibility of an Apple car, according to the report. The outlet reports the employees spearheading the 600-person project have been given permission to triple number of people working on it.

It marks the latest in a string of reports suggesting Apple could look to compete in the automotive industry. The Journal said the 2019 target date is far from concrete, as the company would still need to refine features and clear regulatory and production barriers.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request to comment.

Apple shares were trading more than 1 percent higher Monday afternoon.

Carly Fiorina shot into second place in the Republican presidential field on the heels of another strong debate performance, and Donald Trump has lost some support, a new national CNN/ORC poll shows.

The survey, conducted in the three days after 23 million people tuned in to Wednesday night's GOP debate on CNN, shows that Trump is still the party's front-runner with 24% support. That, though, is an 8 percentage point decrease from earlier in the month when a similar poll had him at 32%.

Fiorina ranks second with 15% support -- up from 3% in early September. She's just ahead of Ben Carson's 14%, though Carson's support has also declined from 19% in the previous poll.

21:40   Sheena Bora case: 2012 bone samples do not match those exhumed
In another twist in the Sheena Bora murder case, bone samples of her charred body collected in 2012 were found by forensic experts to be not matching those obtained from the remains which were exhumed recently.

In related developments, the CBI today accepted the Maharashtra government's request to take over the probe in the sensational case even as a local court extended for another fortnight the judicial custody of accused Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyavar Rai.

Forensic experts at BYL Nair Hospital here who submitted a 26-page report to Khar police station last week have expressed doubts that the bone samples received might have got mixed up and may not belong to Sheena Bora.

A senior culture ministry official was today given the additional charge of Director of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, following the controversial exit of Mahesh Rangarajan from the post last week.             Sanjiv Mittal, Joint Secretary with the Ministry of Culture, has been given the additional charge of NMML Director, sources said here.

"It is an interim arrangement as another Joint Secretary, who was supposed to be given the (in-charge) Director post of NMML is on leave. We did not want to keep the Director's post vacant. Henceforth, he has been given the additional charge," a ministry official said.

As soon as the joint secretary who is on leave returns, the additional charge would be handed over to that official, the sources said, adding that Mittal would be holding the in-charge of Director's post till then.

21:26   Lebanon to enroll 100,000 new Syrian students-refugees
The Lebanese government is launching a campaign to register 100,000 new students from among the Syrian refugee population in its already overwhelmed public schools.

The figure is double the number of refugees who were able to enroll last year.

Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said Monday this will give more refugee children a chance at free education. But he cautioned that nearly the same number of Syrian refugee children are still out of schools.

He says that if more refugee children enroll in schools, this may stem the flow of migrants from the region to Europe. Lebanon is struggling with at least 1.1 million registered Syrian refugees who fled their country's civil war, now in its fifth year.

Bou Saab says Syrians could soon outnumber Lebanese in public schools.

20:51   Re-christen all roads, monuments named after Mughal emperors: VHP
VHP today demanded that all roads and monuments named after Mughal emperors be re-christened, claiming that the country should not drag on with "signs of slavery".

VHP's international secretary general Champat Rai backed the demand made by a Delhi BJP leader for renaming Shahjahan Road, while asking Muslims to show no affection towards Mughal emperors.

"Any proud community won't drag on with signs of slavery. What has been Aurangzeb, Babur, Humayun, Akbar or Shahjahan's contribution to this country? They have conducted atrocities and made people here their slaves," Rai said.

He said it will be good if these names are changed in a harmonious manner.

"More the delay, lesser harmonious it will be. Names, however, will be changed for sure... Changing the name is quite necessary," Rai told PTI, suggesting that the names of Mughal emperors be removed like those of Britishers.

Twelve people died of dengue and over 1,900 fresh cases have been reported in the past one week alone, taking this month's total to nearly 3,000 even as both Delhi and central governments continued their efforts to contain the disease in the city, which is facing its worst outbreak in the past six years.

20:01   Now, Cong's Manish Tewari questions relevance of reservation
In remarks that could raise eyebrows within Congress, former Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari today questioned the relevance of reservation in the 21st century and said if it was required at all, the economic condition, and not caste, should be the basis for it.

The Congress leader's comments came a day after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, in an interview to RSS organs 'Organiser' and 'Panchjanya', pitched for a review of the reservation policy, contending it has been used for political ends and suggesting setting up of an apolitical committee to examine who needs such benefits and for how long.

Tewari insisted that he held these views on reservation for long and referred to an articled written by him over a fortnight ago.

"Notwithstanding whatever Bhagwat has articulated, the time has come to revisit the premise as to whether reservation is at all contextual in the 21st century. And if at all it is contextual then should the basis of reservation be economic as poverty is the biggest indice of backwawrdness?" Tewari said.

Tewari, a leader from Punjab, who served as the I&B Minister in the erstwhile UPA government as well as a party spokesperson, insisted that "economic reservation would benefit the poor irrespective of class, caste and religion".

19:57   54 dead as Boko Haram hits Maiduguri, NE Nigeria
At least 54 people were killed in a series of blasts in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri, police said today, the latest attacks by Boko Haram militants on "soft" civilian targets.

The attacks targeted the Ajilari Cross evening market area and neighbouring Gomari, hitting worshippers at a mosque and football fans watching a televised match.

The army and rescuers said the explosions were caused by homemade devices but one local and the police said a female suicide bomber also blew herself up.

"Fifty-four persons died while 90 others were injured," Borno state police spokesman Victor Isuku told reporters.

"Those injured are being treated at Umaru Shehu General hospital and the (Borno) State Specialist hospital respectively."

Locals however, put the death toll at at least 21. The blasts - the latest to hit the city in the six-year insurgency - came after Nigeria's army claimed the rebels were in disarray.

But Boko Haram's shadowy leader Abubakar Shekau denied the group was a spent force, describing the military claims as "lies" in an audio recording published via social media on Saturday.

19:41   Tight security in Jerusalem for Jewish, Muslim holidays
Israel said today thousands of police would be deployed in Jerusalem ahead of the Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha holidays after three days of clashes rocked the Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Authorities also said 66 people had been arrested in Jerusalem over the past week, including some detained in connection with the unrest at Al-Aqsa which saw Israeli police clash with rioters.

Yom Kippur begins tomorrow night and lasts until Wednesday evening, with thousands of Jews expected to visit the Western Wall below the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem's Old City.

The Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday begins on Wednesday evening and continues until Sunday.

From this night, traffic will be restricted around the Old City and checkpoints will be set up.

The Al-Aqsa compound will be open to visits as usual on Wednesday, but only Muslims will be allowed access during the four-day Eid holiday, police said.

19:17   Defectors: ISIS is killing Muslims, not protecting them
They are a new and growing phenomenon. Of the 58 cases, nearly two thirds of the defections took place in the year 2015. One third happened during the summer months alone.

The defectors' experiences are diverse. Not everyone has become a fervent supporter of liberal democracy. Some may, in fact, have committed crimes. They were all, at some point, enthusiastic supporters of the most violent and viciously totalitarian organization of our age. Yet they are now its worst enemies.

The quality of their testimony varies, and the precise circumstances and reasons for leaving the Islamic State aren't always clear. What convinced me that, as a whole, their stories are credible is how consistent their messages were.

Among the 58 defector stories, I found four narratives that were particularly strong:

One of the most persistent criticisms was the extent to which the group is fighting against other Sunni rebels. According to the defectors, toppling the Assad regime didn't seem to be a priority, and little was done to help the (Sunni) Muslims who were targeted by it.

"Rahul Gandhi's speeches have become like worn out tape recorders. He speaks the same words again and again. Rahul Gandhi, the tallest leader of the Grand Old Party, is nothing but a grown up child. And, that's why, his puerile views on topics of importance, carry no meaning for this country," Patra said.

Malegaon blast case: The Central govt has sought two more weeks to respond to the petitions on the issue of the removal of Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian (pictured). Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi rubbishes allegations in the Supreme Court that former prosecutor Rohini Salian was pressurised by the NIA to 'go slow' in the case.

Kicking up a controversy, the special public prosecutor in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case in which some Hindu extremists are accused, alleged that the National Investigation Agency had asked her to "go soft" on the accused after the Narendra Modi government assumed power in May last year.

"An NIA officer called me up and said he wanted to meet me. He then met me some time last year and asked me to go soft on the accused in this case," claimed Rohini Salian, who is the SPP in the case. She said the officer, who she declined to name, had apparently got instructions from higher-ups to convey this to her, Salian told reporters in Mumbai.
