A third student of Film and Television Institute of India, who was on a relay hunger strike, was taken to a hospital today after his sugar levels dropped, even as protests against appointment of actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan as institution's chairman continued. 

Ankit Thapa was shifted to a private hospital today on the fourth day of relay hunger strike. He had replaced Hiral Savad who too was hospitalised on Friday and was discharged yesterday.

German authorities warned today they were stretched to capacity to welcome refugees arriving en masse, as Europe scrambled to hold emergency talks on the unprecedented crisis. 

Some 13,015 refugees arrived in Munich yesterday alone, and at least 1,400 were expected today to reach the southern German city -- the end of their exhausting and often perilous journey through Hungary and Austria.

19:45   Yemen's exiled president backs out of talks with rebels
Yemen's internationally recognised president will not participate in UN-brokered talks later this week with Shiite rebels who control the capital and much of the country's north, his office said today. 

The statement said there would be no talks with the rebels, known as Houthis, unless they accept a UN resolution that obliges them to withdraw from areas they seized and surrender weapons taken from state institutions.

19:18   29,278 die on Mumbai rly tracks in 10 years, eight every day
Mumbai's suburban train network, often described as the city's lifeline, proved to be a death trap with at least eight people dying on an average every day between 2005 and 2014 after falling off trains or while crossing the tracks. 

A total of 29278 people lost their lives in accidents, with 6989 dying after falling off trains that are usually chock-a-block through the day. Another 22,289 people got killed while crossing the tracks, according to information made available to activist Anis Khan by the Government Railway Police, Mumbai, under the RTI law.

18:46   Clinton had right to delete personal e-mails: US Justice
Hillary Clinton had the right to delete messages from her personal e-mail account that she deemed non-work related while she was Secretary of State, the US Department of Justice said in a court filing. 

The filing obtained by AFP yesterday came in response to legal action filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative monitoring group that wants access to all of Clinton's e-mail while she was the top US diplomat.

17:57   Rape victim shot dead in UP
An 18-year-old rape victim was today shot dead allegedly by bike-borne youths in Baijapur village in Dakshintola area, two days before she had to appear in a court as witness in the case, police said. 

The incident occurred when the girl along with her brother was going to visit a doctor, and died of bullet injuries on the spot, they said.

Activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena today put up a non-veg food stall outside a Jain-dominated housing society here to protest against meat sale ban during 'Paryushan' festival. 

MNS party workers shouted slogans and publicly ate chicken outside 'Jai housing society' in suburban Vile Parle. They also displayed banners which read "Yes, we will eat non-veg".

Invoking Dalit icons B R Ambedkar and Jagjivan Ram, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will kick off his election campaign in Bihar with rally on September 19 where other top leaders of the grand alliance are likely to be present. 

The party believes with RJD chief Lalu Prasad and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar addressing the rally with the theme of "Samata and Samrasata" (equity and harmony), the anti-BJP alliance will be able drive home the message of social justice with greater force.

17:12   Strong 6.6-magnitude quake hits northwest Mexico: USGS
A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck offshore in northwestern Mexico early today between the Baja California tourist resort region and Sinaloa state, but there were no immediate reports of damage. 

The 10-kilometre deep quake hit at 3:14 am (0814 GMT) and was located some 59 kilometres southwest of the Sinaloa town of Topolobampo, according to the US Geological Survey.

17:12   Iran says US must honour nuclear deal once under way
Iran's foreign minister said today that Washington must honour a nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers once implementation begins and block any attempt by lawmakers to meddle with it. 

The comments by Mohammad Javad Zarif came after President Barack Obama's Democrats last week staved off a united Republican effort to sink the July agreement in Congress.

Patel quota agitation leader Hardik Patel has again postponed his 'reverse Dandi March', scheduled for today, to September 15, claiming that he has been invited by a Cabinet minister for a meeting with the state Chief Minister on the issue. 

Earlier, on September 5, he had postponed his reverse Dandi March - from Dandi village in Navsari district to Ahmedabad - till today.

15:54   Rajnath postpones visit to forward areas along Pak, China borders
Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was scheduled to visit forward areas along the borders with Pakistan and China, has postponed the tour citing a key BJP meeting on Bihar. 

Singh, who was planning to visit Samba along Indo-Pak border and Chumar in eastern Ladakh for three days beginning Tuesday, postponed the visit and may tour both the areas later this month.

15:32   Clashes rock Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound
Palestinians clashed with Israeli police at Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound today just hours before the start of the Jewish New Year, police and witnesses said. 

The clashes came with tensions running high after Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon last week outlawed two Muslim groups that confront Jewish visitors to the compound, which is holy to both faiths.

Former Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's son, Praveen Manjhi, was detained by the police in state's Jehanabad region on Sunday after Rs 4 lakh 65 thousand was recovered from him. 

Praveen has been detained as model code of conduct is effective in the state ahead of the assembly polls.

14:24   Death toll rises to five after Japan flood
The number of people who died in floods which devastated Japan this week reached five Sunday as rescuers continued their search for more than a dozen still missing. 

Police said they found the body of a 68-year-old man in Tochigi, north of Tokyo, in the early morning, the fifth located in the rescue operation. The body was reportedly found inside a submerged car at a water-covered rice field in the town that also suffered floods.

13:22   Lankan war crimes issue to come up at UNHRC tomorrow
The alleged war crimes during Sri Lanka's final assault on the LTTE will come up once again here tomorrow at the UNHRC, with the US set to bring a resolution supporting a domestic investigation unlike previous ones in which it insisted on an international probe. 

The draft has been sponsored by the US and other core group of countries called 'Human Rights in Sri Lanka, with focus on government efforts to provide reconciliation and accountability and based on findings of OHCHR report'.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the Facebook headquarters for a Townhall question and answer meeting on September 27, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced through his official FB profile.

Zuckerberg wrote in his post, "I'm excited to announce that Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India will be visiting Facebook HQ later this month for a Townhall Q&A. Prime Minister Modi and I will discuss how communities can work together to address social and economic challenges."

12:45   Don't share sensitive info on FB, WhatsApp: MHA to forces
The Union Home Ministry has directed central paramilitary forces like CRPF and BSF to restrain their personnel from sharing "sensitive" information and photos on social media forums like WhatsApp and Facebook. 

The latest directive from the ministry came after it was detected that the troops of a paramilitary force circulated photos of some active Unmanned Aerial Vehicles from their operational base in the Naxal-affected areas of Chhattisgarh.

12:42   Thousands flee 2 fast-moving California wildfires
Thousands of people rushed to escape one massive wildfire charging across California's tinder-dry Sierra Nevada foothills and another out-of-control fire that broke out in Northern California, sending four firefighters to the hospital with burns. 

The northern fire began in Lake County, 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of San Francisco, and grew to about 15 square miles (39 square kilometers) in just a few hours, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said yesterday.

12:39   Clashes mar first-ever international marathon in Valley
Clashes erupted here today between the youth and security forces near the venue of the first-ever international half marathon in Kashmir valley. The youth shouted slogans and pelted stones at the forces near the venue in Hazratbal area of the city, police said. 

The security personnel fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters at Habak Crossing. "The situation is under control now," police said.

11:34   Clashes at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque
Clashes have broken out at the al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem after Israeli police entered the compound, reports say.

Dozens of police broke into the site and Palestinians threw stones and fireworks at them, Israel's Ynet news reports.

Similar clashes took place at the end of July.

11:17   Pak-wary Modi set to skip UN address
A fortnight from now, at the milestone General Assembly on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, India will cut off its nose to spite its face.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in New York for the occasion, but he will not address the General Assembly in a departure from the practice followed by every one of his predecessors on landmark UN anniversaries.

Instead, the job has been given to external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj who will speak in the iconic home of the General Assembly on October 1 with not even a single head of state or government to listen to her. They would all have left New York -including Modi - by the time it is the turn of ministers to address the "general debate" of the session which lasts till October 6.

00:04   Nine Indians injured in crane crash at Mecca's Grand Mosque
At least nine Indians were among 80 people injured when a construction crane crashed into the Grand Mosque of Saudi Arabia's holy Muslim city of Mecca today.

"Our consulate in Jeddah is monitoring situation in Makkah following tragic accident. We have recd reports that 9 Indian pilgrims are injured," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

He said senior Indian officers, including the Consul General, are in Mecca and Indian doctors deployed in all government hospitals are trying to get more information. According to an AFP report, 65 people were killed in the tragedy.

00:03   Thousands rally in support of Syrian refugees in London
Tens of thousands of Britons rallied in London on Saturday, urging their government to do more to help Syrian refugees at a demonstration attended by newly elected opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The march through central London led from Hyde Park to Prime Minister David Cameron's office and participants could be seen brandishing placards reading: "Open the Borders" and "Refugees In, Tories Out".

"I want to support the refugees," said Deborah Flatley, who held a homemade cardboard sign reading: "We admire your bravery. You deserve a safe and happy life. We welcome you here with open arms".
