23:57   'Anti-gay marriage' clerk ordered freed
A Kentucky clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples can now go free, a judge said Tuesday -- albeit with a caveat she may not be willing to accept.

US District Judge David Bunning ordered that Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis be released from jail Tuesday -- five days after he sent her there -- on the grounds that her deputies issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples in her absence.

But Bunning's new order says Davis, once free, still cannot interfere with her deputies issuing marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples.

It wasn't immediately clear how Davis would react to the order, but she has said she will not authorize her office to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples if her name remains on the certificate.

23:34   Norway hotel tycoon offers 5,000 hotel nights to refugees
A Norwegian billionaire who made his fortune in the hotel business offered today 5,000 nights in his hotel chain to refugees who do not have a spot in asylum centres.

"We are offering 5,000 nights to refugees who need it," Petter Stordalen, who owns the Nordic Choice Hotels chain, wrote on Twitter.

The migrant drama unfolding in Europe "concerns absolutely everyone," he told Norwegian news agency NTB, adding that he would also cover the meal costs for the refugees who stay in his establishments.

The Norwegian migration board UDI said it would consider Stordalen's offer if its centres were overflowing.

Norway received 2,313 asylum requests in August, most of them from Syrians, Eritreans and Afghans, the highest number registered in a single month since the 1990s.

According to UDI, the number of asylum requests could reach up to 16,000 for the full year of 2015, compared to 11,480 in 2014.

23:18   Patels vow to boycott PM's US visit
To mount pressure on government for reservation under OBC quota, the Patidar or Patel community members living in the US today announced to "boycott" Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit there for delivering him a "strong message" on the issue.

More than 1,000 Patels today held a meeting in Edison town of New Jersey in US to extend their support to protests being organised by their brethren here, Sardar Patel Group leader Lalji Patel said here.

SPG disassociated itself from Hardik Patel-led Patidar Ananmat Andolan Samiti after their mega rally on August 25 here and is running a parallel movement to press for the quota demand.

"Patels living in US have come forward and extended their support to our cause. Today, more than 1,000 Patels living in Edison held a meeting and extended support to us. They have announced to boycott PM Narendra Modi's upcoming visit in US," he said.

Lalji said Patels in US always participated with great enthusiasm during such visits of PM.

"But now, the Patel community in US wants to give a strong message to PM who has not taken any decision about (granting) reservation to Patels. Thus, we have decided to stay away from his programme in US," he said.

23:04   MNS to Bollywood: Help crisis-hit farmers or face film boycott
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has asked Bollywood personalities to come forward to help farmers reeling under drought-like conditions in the state and threatened to call for boycott of their films and "teach them a lesson" if its diktat is not followed.

The Raj Thackeray-led party today released a letter addressed to Bollywood personalities like artists, producers, directors, asking them to provide succour to agriculturists, especially in Marathwada which is facing severe water scarcity and from where several farmer suicides have been reported.

Those not coming forward to help farmers facing agrarian crisis will be "taught a lesson" and their films will be boycotted, said MNS, whose film wing drafted the letter, whose copies have been sent to Hindi film fraternity members.

The MNS' move evoked a sharp reaction from the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena, who said this is not the way to seek help for distressed cultivators.

Ameya Khopkar, President of Maharashtra Navnirman Chitrapat Karmachari Sena, who sent the letters, today said Bollywood should help willingly or MNS will "teach them a lesson".

"If Marathi actors like Nana Patkar, Makarand Anaspure and Bollywood stars such as Aamir Khan and Salman Khan can help society then why not others? Farmers who are now in bad situation cultivate foodgrains not only for the Marathi actors but for all. So it is their duty to repay when they need it," he said.

23:02   North Korean defector: Kim Jong Un's days are numbered
He's a fairly young man, wearing an ill-fitting suit. His thin neck is pronounced, giving way to an equally thin face and frame. We're meeting over a meal of sushi, something he specifically requested because it's rare for those trapped in North Korea.

For his safety, I'll limit descriptions of this defector. We've agreed that I can say he worked among the elites in Pyongyang. He is by far, the most recent defector I've ever interviewed; he's only been in the free world for a year.

CNN found him through university researchers, working in conjunction with the South Korean government, who verified his status as a North Korean defector.

He stresses that revealing much more than these few details could endanger his family, still trapped in the Hermit Kingdom. He also fears North Korea could manage to hunt him down in his new life. But he's talking to me to get a message to the West out.

He believes that among North Korea's dictators, the dynasty of Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il and now Kim Jong Un, "It is Kim Jong Un's regime that is the most unstable. And it is going to be the shortest."

22:46   Pope radically revises rules for divorcing Catholics
Pope Francis on Tuesday radically revised the process by which Catholics may annul their marriages, streamlining steps that many in the church considered too cumbersome and costly.

The move is the latest in a series of reforms by Francis as he seeks to make the church more responsive to the real needs of lay Catholics, especially those who have long felt marginalized by the hierarchy. Without the annulments, Catholics who remarry are not allowed to receive Holy Communion, which many describe as a painful exclusion from the church's chief sacrament.

The Vatican announcement also comes just weeks before Francis makes his first-ever visit to the United States. Americans accounted for about half of the nearly 50,000 annulments granted in 2012, the latest year for which statistics are available.

"This move is in accord with the Pope's oft-repeated image of the Church as a 'field hospital' that goes out to meet people where they are most in need, and then to treat their most serious wounds first -- rather than stay at home and wait for people to come to them," said the Rev. James Bretzke, an expert on papal affairs at Boston College.

The three main changes announced on Tuesday are are:

Eliminating a second review by a cleric before a marriage can be nullified.

Giving bishops the ability to fast-track and grant the annulments themselves in certain circumstances -- for example, when spousal abuse or an extramarital affair has occurred.

The process should be free, except for a nominal fee for administrative costs, and should be completed within 45 days.

22:19   US puts three Hamas leaders on terror blacklist
The United States put three senior members of Hamas, a senior commander and two leaders freed by Israel in exchange for captive soldier Gilad Shalit, on its terror blacklist today.

The State Department said Yehia Sinwar and Rawhi Mushtaha along with the Palestinian group's military commander Mohammed Deif had been named "specially designated global terrorists" under US law.

Deif has been described as Israel's most wanted man for his role since 2002 as commander of Hamas' military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, overseeing attacks in Gaza and Israel.

"He is known for deploying suicide bombers and directing the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers," the State Department said in a statement announcing his new designation.

"During the 2014 conflict between Israel and Hamas, Deif was the mastermind of Hamas' offensive strategy."

As "global terrorists," the three Palestinian figures are subject to the seizure of any assets they hold in areas of US jurisdiction and Americans are forbidden from doing business with them.

18:31   Maria rubbishes proximity claims: Met Peter Mukerjea only recently
Just in: Former Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria denies claims that he is 'close' to Peter and Indrani Mukerjea. Maria, who was promoted to Director General Home Guards, Maharashtra, says he met the former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea for the first time recently. Mukerjea is being questioned in the murder of his wife Indrani's daugher, Sheena Bora.

Former Mumbai police chief and BJP MP Satyapal Singh hinted at 'friendly relations' between Rakesh Maria and Peter Mukerjea as a possible cause for being shunted upstairs. Satyapal Singh made this claim to CNN-IBN.

Maria, however told India Today TV that Indrani spoke only English, which the local police probing the case, did not understand.

Eyebrows have been raised at Maria's decision to head the Sheena Bora murder probe. A few days ago, Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis rapped the Mumbai Police over the attention devoted to the Sheena Bora murder case. "Police have shown a lot of involvement and attention in a case which is in the media spotlight. It should pay similar attention to other cases which do not get media focus," said Fadnavis, who controls the home portfolio.

The new Mumbai police commissioner Ahmed Javed, denied reports that Maria's entire team probing the Bora murder including police inspector Dinesh Kadam, were shunted out. Speaking about the Sheena murder investigation Ahmed said today, "Investigation is a team work. The accused are already in judicial custody. As far as interrogation goes, it is over at this time. The investigation will be monitored in the right, professional way. The case should be handled properly and evidence collected in such a way that it becomes a complete case when it is put up for trial," he added.

Maria's transfer comes as a shock to many in the state administration as the Mumbai Police are about to file a chargesheet in the case in the next few weeks. State home secretary KP Bakshi, however, said the senior IPS officer was due for promotion as the DGP and the government wanted the new commissioner to have time to settle in to handle the festival season that begins with Ganpati and goes on till Diwali.

17:10   Sheena Bora case: I was illegally detained, says Sanjeev Khanna
Sanjeev Khanna, the step father of Sheena Bora and a key accused in the sensational murder case, today filed an application before a court in Mumbai, saying that he is in "illegal' detention after which the court sought a report from the police.

Meanwhile, Khanna has been remanded to judicial custody till September 21.

The application moved by his lawyer Shreyansh Mithare says that the police ought to have produced Khanna in court on Monday but he was instead taken to Kolkata. Mithare said not producing Khanna before the court on the day when his remand ends amounts to illegal detention.

Magistrate G R Taur called for a report from the Khar police station and is likely to hear the application on September 10.

Yesterday, a fortnight after their arrest, a local court had remanded key accused Indrani Mukherjea and her driver Shyam Rai to judicial custody till September 21 while Khanna was taken to Kolkata for producing him in a court there.

The mandatory period for police custody of all the three had ended yesterday.

13:54   Sonia stays Congress president, no elevation for Rahul
Just in: Sonia Gandhi's tenure as Congress president extended by a year.  the election for the post of the Congress President has been postponed for one year. It will be held next year, in effect giving Sonia Gandhi one years' extension.

The CWC decision means Rahul's formal elevation will not happen this year even though he would become more active in decision-making.

Our sources tell us that there was realisation both among the senior leaders as well the among the Team Rahul to maintain status quo on the top leadership for some more time. The old guard in the Congress are not happy with Rahul's style of functioning and would rather put their weight behind Sonia Gandhi. The move to keep Sonia as Congress president will keep the hostile faction at bay at least for a year and more importantly for the Bihar polls up ahead.

Sonia Gandhi, who took over reigns of Congress in 1998, is the longest serving president of the party till date.

11:55   Govt should take Pawar's guidance in tackling drought: Sena
The Maharashtra government should have no hesitation in taking advice from an "experienced" Sharad Pawar in tackling drought, the Shiv Sena today said, but at the same time it criticised the NCP chief for "not using his position" as agriculture minister for betterment of farmers.

The party, which is part of the ruling coalition in the state, said that there should be no politics over the critical issue of drought.

"Sharad Pawar is an extremely experienced man. He is once again out on a tour of drought affected regions to take a stock of farmers affected by the natural calamity. The government should have no qualms about taking guidance from him," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said.

The party, however, hit out at other NCP leaders, saying they are "in the habit of playing politics over the drought conditions. "They will shout and say the government took guidance from Pawar. Politics should not be played over the issue and Pawar should be the first person to realise this," it said.

04:18   Damon Wayans defends Bill Cosby, calls accusers 'un-rape-able'
Comedian Damon Wayans shared his theory on the reasons behind the sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby when he visited Power 105's The Breakfast Club on Friday.

"Tell the truth," Wayans said about his advice for the Cosby Show star. "If I was him, I would divorce my wife, give her all my money and then I would go do a deposition. I would light one of [those] three-hour cigars. I'd have some wine and maybe a Quaalude, and I would just go off, because I don't believe that he was raping. I believe he was in relationships with all of them, and then he's like, 'You know what? It's 78. It don't work like that no more. I can't get it up for any of y'all. Bye, b**ches,' and then they're like, 'Oh, really? Rape!' "

04:16   Syrian refugees in Uruguay protest to leave country
Syrian refugees who arrived in Uruguay last year under a resettlement program protested outside the presidential offices, saying they are living in poverty and want to leave.

"We didn't flee the war to die here in poverty," 36-year-old Maher el Dis told AFP. "This is not a place suited for refugees."

Five families, with more than 30 children, camped out with their luggage on one of Montevideo's main squares yesterday, saying they will stay there until they are able to leave the South American country.

The resettlement program, launched last year under Uruguay's then-president Jose Mujica, aims to take in families with small children, house them and provide them with a modest income.

But the protesting families, who arrived in October, said they are isolated and struggling in Uruguay, which has just a tiny Arab population and a relatively high cost of living.

"We want to live with (our) identity and (our) values," Maraa el-Chibli said through tears, speaking through an interpreter.

"We're not here for them to test this out on us," said the 55-year-old father of 15.

The families have been housed in shelters and receive a small stipend, but they said it was not enough.

03:35   Muslim flight attendant says she was wrongly suspended
A Muslim flight attendant for ExpressJet says she was wrongly suspended from her job last month because she refused to serve alcohol to passengers, citing her religious beliefs.

Charee Stanley, a Detroit-based flight attendant for ExpressJet, filed a discrimination complaint Tuesday with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The airline had agreed to give Stanley a religious accommodation, saying she could work out an arrangement with the other flight attendant on duty so they could serve alcohol instead. She was suspended only after a colleague complained, said Lena Masri, an attorney with the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Stanley, 40, has worked for the Atlanta-based airline for nearly three years and during that time converted to Islam, Masri said. Stanley approached a supervisor in June after learning that her faith forbids not just consuming alcohol but also serving it.

When the co-worker complained, Stanley was put on unpaid leave for a year, Masri said.

"She was placed on unpaid leave for following the instructions that ExpressJet airlines gave her," Masri said.

Masri claimed the complaint against Stanley was discriminatory, with the employee noting Stanley carried a book with "foreign writings" and wore a head scarf.

A spokeswoman for ExpressJet said in an emailed statement that the airline values diversity but could not comment on specific personnel matters.

02:35   Israel struggles to crack down on Jewish extremists
On an exposed hill outside of Qusra, a small Palestinian village in the West Bank, a dozen volunteers huddle around a fire, passing around hot coffee and tea. Their homes are a short walk away, but the men will not leave this hill until dawn. From here, they can see their village and its surroundings. It is the best place to spot an attack. And the most recent attacks, carried out by suspected Jewish extremists, have come in the middle of the night.

Armed with flashlights and sticks, men in small teams patrol the roads and the outskirts of town, looking for people or vehicles they don't recognize. If they spot something suspicious, they will alert the town through the mosque speakers.

"We coordinate together when we see suspicious people walking around or a suspicious car driving in the village, so we can wake up the people," says Abdulhakim Wade, one of the men who volunteers as a lookout.

They have reason to worry. In late July, just a short drive away, suspected Jewish extremists firebombed a Palestinian home in Duma, killing an 18-month-old toddler. Both his parents later died from their injuries, and their 4-year-old son remains in critical condition at the hospital.

02:10   Palin: 'Speak American' in the US
Former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is praising Jeb Bush for being bilingual -- but she would prefer people in this country "speak American."

"It's a benefit of Bush to be able to be so fluent, because we have a large and wonderful Hispanic population building America, and that's a great connection he has with them," Palin told CNN's Jake Tapper in an interview that aired Sunday on "State of the Union." "On the other hand, I think we can send a message and say, 'You want to be in America, A, you'd better be here legally or you're out of here. B, when you're here, let's speak American. ... Let's speak English, and that's a kind of a unifying aspect of the nation is the language that is understood by all."

Donald Trump recently criticized Bush for answering a question in Spanish, saying the former Florida governor should only speak in English in when the US Bush said he answered in Spanish because he was asked the question in Spanish.

01:20   Clinton says no email apology: 'What I did was allowed'
Hillary Rodham Clinton said today she does not need to apologize for using a private email account and server while secretary of state because "what I did was allowed."

In an interview with The Associated Press during a campaign swing through Iowa, which kicks off next year's state by-state primary race, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination also said the lingering questions about her email practices while serving as President Barack Obama's top diplomat have not damaged her campaign.

"Not at all. It's a distraction, certainly," Clinton said.

"But it hasn't in any way affected the plan for our campaign, the efforts we're making to organize here in Iowa and elsewhere in the country. And I still feel very confident about the organization and the message that my campaign is putting out."

Yet even in calling the inquiry into how she used email while at the State Department a distraction, Clinton played down how it has affected her personally as a candidate.

"As the person who has been at the center of it, not very much," Clinton said. "I have worked really hard this summer, sticking to my game plan about how I wanted to sort of reintroduce myself to the American people."

00:52   UN Syria envoy warns of more refugees if no peace deal
The UN special envoy for Syria warned today many thousands more refugees would flee to Europe if the international community cannot find a peace accord and abandons them to the Islamic State group.

"Why are people leaving? Because they have lost hope after five years of endless conflict and they see only one winner, Daesh," Staffan de Mistura told journalists in Brussels, using another term for IS.

De Mistura said up to one million more people could be at risk in western Syria, potentially adding to the flood of refugees seeking safety in the European Union.

The international community was constantly trying but failing to come up with a formula but "there is no more time for such lengthy political processes," he said.

In failing to sink their differences, mainly over the future governance of Syria and the role of President Bashar al-Assad, world powers were by default supporting a military solution to a conflict which has now claimed nearly 250,000 lives, he said.

Some 11 million Syrians have been displaced from their homes by the conflict that began in March 2011, with four million becoming refugees.

00:36   New 'Superhenge'? Remains found near Stonehenge
Stonehenge, the world-renowned circle of bluestone columns in an isolated field in southwest England, has been shrouded in mystery for centuries.

But it seems there's even more to this incomplete story from the Neolithic period -- archaeologists say they have uncovered traces of larger stone monuments less than 3 kilometers (2 miles) from Stonehenge.

The Stonehenge Hidden Landscape Project team says it has made the discovery beneath Durrington Walls, also known as "superhenge" -- one of the largest known henge monuments built before Stonehenge, which is believed to have been completed 3,500 years ago.

"Our high-resolution ground penetrating radar data has revealed an amazing row of up to 90 standing stones, a number of which have survived after being pushed over, and a massive bank placed over the stones," said professor Wolfgang Neubauer, director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology.
