An 7.7 earthquake has hit north India, including Delhi and Srinagar, a few minutes ago. Early reports say the tremors were severe and lasted for a minute at least. People were evacuated from buildings after strong tremors were felt in New Delhi. Confirmed tremors felt in Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Rajasthan.  Delhi metro services have been discontinued. The quake epicentre is believed to be the Hindukush range.

Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweets: Where was the epicentre? Was so strongly felt - as if someone, with a firm hand, was moving the chair. Could have lasted 30-45 seconds?
