Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting today as protests continue across the state over the alleged incidents of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book the Sikhs.

The BJP, which co-governs the state with Badal's Shiromani Akali Dal, will also hold an urgent "core group meet" of the party today to take stock of the situation in the state, a party spokesperson said.

State BJP chief Kamal Sharma said the incident of the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib was unfortunate and appealed to the people to maintain communal harmony and peace in the state.

"BJP has already conveyed to the Chief Minister to take strongest action against the culprits," he said, adding that the society needs to stay united in this hour of crisis.
