After 65 years, President Pranab Mukherjee will not perform the Durga Puja at Miriti village in Birbhum, West Bengal, this year due to the death of his wife Suvra in August this year.

For the past 66 years Pranab Mukherjee has played the role of a priest and conducted traditional rituals of 'Mahasaptami', the first day of Durga Puja, at his ancestral village.

The Mukherjee family tradition goes back 120 years, according to family sources, ever since the President's grandfather, Jangaleswar Mukherjee, introduced it in the village.

In 2012, Rediff.com's Indrani Roy had covered the President's Durga Puja for us, you can read her account here.
