Ganesha immersion row: Curfew imposed in 4 areas of Varanasi after violence

Thousands of sadhus held a protest in Varanasi today against the September 22 police lathi-charge on a procession heading to immerse Lord Ganesha's idol in the Ganga.

The police action led to widespread violence. Hundreds of sadhus turned up for the Anyay Pratikaar Yatra at Town Hall ground, many people joined them to protest against the police action on September 22, reports DNA.

They shouted slogans and marched till Dashashwamedh Ghat. Around 4:30 pm, the scene turned violent as police personnel beat up the protesters mercilessly.
In retaliation, police vehicles were ablaze and stones were pelted. They even burned down a police booth at Godaulia.

The city turned into a violent zone with protesting people and cops locked in street fights, according to the report.
