Govt lists Swachch Bharat as successful; hails PM as reformer & transformer

On the eve of completion of one year of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu addressed a press conference in New Delhi.

Here are highlights of what the minister said:

* Swachch Bharat involves motivating people to avoid littering, keeping surroundings clean & deciding against open defecation. Message has reached people; behavioural change has begun to occur

* Despite sanitation being a state subject, Swachch Bharat has been launched by the PM to transform India. Our actions show that PM Modi is a performer, reformer and transformer.

* Estimated cost of Swachch Bharat mission in urban areas: 66,009 crore rupees

* 4,64,651 toilets constructed under Swachch Bharat mission so far; another 11,80,454 in progress

* Mechanical cleaning systems introduced in all 400 major stations, 169 smaller stations.

* Bio-toilets have been installed in 8,368 Indian Railway coaches, another 4,400 to be covered next year.

* Let all Indians participate in this noble mission -- Tan Se, Man Se, Dhan Se -- and strengthen this Jan Andolan.

* A clean India is the most profound statement we can make to the world which is watching us.

* Swachch Bharat Mission is the mother of all missions.
