A total of 58 persons from 18 countries have deserted the Islamic State between January 2014 and August 2015, latest intelligence inputs claimed. The list included two Indians -- Kalyan youth Areeb Majeed and a 17-year-old girl who was believed to have travelled to Syria from Qatar, sources said.

The highest number of deserters, as per the reports, were from Syria (21), followed by Saudi Arabia (9) and four each from Tunisia and Indonesia. There were two deserters each from India, Australia, Germany, Tajikistan, Turkey and the UK. Others were from Belgium, Egypt, France, Iraq, Jordan, Libya and Switzerland.

"These people have deserted IS at great personal risk, but have done so because they either felt they were being given a raw deal compared to other foreign fighters, or because they became disillusioned with the outfit," said an intelligence source.
