Nitish Kumar elected leader of Grand Alliance legislature party

M I Khan from Patna reports: The Grand Alliance of Janata Dal-United, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress formally elected Chief Minister-designate Nitish Kumar as its Legislature Party leader on Saturday, a joint statement released by the parties said.

The newly-elected legislators of the Grand Alliance met at the annexe of the Bihar Legislative Council and unanimously elected Kumar as its Legislature Party leader, JD-U spokesperson Sanjay Singh told reporters.

JD-U president Sharad Yadav, general secretary K C Tyagi, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, former chief minister Rabri Devi and senior Congress leader C P joshi were present at the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Kumar was elected the leader of JD-U Legislature Party by the newly-elected MLAs. 

A team of senior leaders of the Grand Alliance -- including Kumar, Sharad Yadav, Lalu Prasad and Joshi -- will meet Governor Ramnath Kovind to stake claim to form the next government.

The Grand Alliance won 178 of the 243 assembly seats in Bihar.

On Saturday morning, Kumar met Governor Ram Nath Kovind and apprised him of the state cabinet meeting to dissolve the House to make way for 16th Legislative Assembly and a new government. He also submitted his resignation.
