20:45   A beautiful mind whom the world recognised late
Dr John F Nash Jr, a Nobel Prize-winning mathematician whose descent into and recovery from mental illness inspired the Academy Award-winning film A Beautiful Mind, was killed in a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike.

As a Princeton University graduate student, he had produced a 27-page thesis on game theory -- in essence, the applied mathematical study of decision-making in situations of conflict -- that would become one of the most celebrated works in the field.

Before the academic world could fully recognize his achievement, Dr Nash descended into a condition eventually diagnosed as schizophrenia.

For the better part of 20 years, his once supremely rational mind was beset by delusions and hallucinations.

19:57   Nepal warns India of flash floods after major landslide blocks river
Nepal has alerted India of possible flash floods in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh after massive landslides, likely triggered by recent devastating earthquakes, blocked Kali Gandaki river in western Nepal, creating a huge artificial lake.

Authorities in India have been informed about the formation of the artificial lake, which could burst, leading to flash floods in Nepal as well as in Bihar and Uttar
Pradesh, said Hari Prasad Mainali, the chief district officer of Nepal's Nawalparasi district, which borders India.

"There are chances of the artificial lake created in the river by the landslide bursting any time. We have asked the Indian side to remain alert," said Mainali.

Security personnel have been deployed on the river banks, urging people to remain alert as the artificial lake could burst at any time.

Thousands of people in Nepal's Myagdi district and surrounding areas have already fled to safety after the landslides buried dozen of houses. However, no casualties have been reported so far in the country.

A new deep and growing lake has been formed on the Kali Gandaki River in Myagdi district, about 140km north-west of the capital, Kathmandu, after landslides overnight.

17:32   Selling your smartphones? Your deleted data can be retrieved
Thinking of selling your old smartphone? Watch out, as its data may be retrievable even after wiping it!

User data is routinely retrievable from second-hand Android devices that have been wiped through a factory reset, a new Cambridge study has warned.

Most Android handsets offer no easily accessible way of deleting user data including access tokens, messages, images and other content, researchers said.

The factory-reset shortcomings uncovered by researchers at the Cambridge University affect an estimated 500 million Android handsets, and pose a problem for organisations that routinely resell such devices.

Researchers said up to 630 million people do not properly wipe multimedia files.

They examined 21 second-hand devices running Android versions 2.3 to 4.3 from five manufacturers that had been wiped using the operating system's built-in factory reset feature, 'Tech Week Europe' reported.

16:30   Why global burger joints want no beef with India
India Today reports: International burgers eating into India's spicy street food market have bulged over the past decade. But the global chains, reluctant to pick bones with local laws and beliefs in the world's second most populous nation, are staying off beef and pork as they clash for a larger slice of the country's succulent fast-food industry.

Wendy's, the world's third largest hamburger conglomerate after McDonald's and Burger King, joined the battle for the Indian palate earlier in May.

But the Ohio-based firm, in a public display of nerves, replaced its never-frozen, North American beef with socially-acceptable chicken and mutton burgers and six vegetarian offerings to boot.

15:48   Day after talks fail, Gujjars intensify agitation in Rajasthan
Pressing for 5 per cent reservation, Gujjars on Sunday intensified their agitation by blocking highways in parts of Rajasthan and threatening to expand it across the state as they alleged that the state government had failed to offer any concrete proposal to meet their demand.

The community members, who started the renewed agitation on Thursday last by disrupting rail traffic, on Sunday blocked National Highway 11 at Dausa and a state highway in Sawaimadhopur district to build pressure on the state government, a day after their talks ended in a deadlock.

The Gujjars blocked the Agra-Jaipur highway at Sikandara in Dausa and Sawaimadhopur-Sheopur state highway in Khandar area of Sawaimadhopur district where the Gujjars are squatting, police said.

Traffic on both the highways has been diverted to other roads and police has been deployed around the area to maintain law and order, police added.

"Several hundred people blocked the highway at Sikandara this morning while the Sawaimadhopur-Sheopur state highway is also blocked since last night," they said.

"We are intensifying the agitation after the government failed to offer any concrete plan to provide the community five per cent reservation under the legal limit of 50 per cent.

15:39   Naidu on Rahul: Zeroes can't acknowledge heroes
Launching a counter offensive against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for giving the Modi government "zero out of 10" for handling farmers' issues, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu today said "zeroes cannot see beyond zero".

"The entire world is hailing Modi as a great leader, a man of action. GDP rate has gone up, inflation is reduced, and you say zero. Zeroes cannot see beyond zero. Zeroes have no ability to acknowledge heroes," he said.

Asked about Rahul's new-found aggression following his return from a 56-day sabbatical, Naidu said the government was "least worried".

"Rahul has been in politics for 11 years. What has happened? Congress party lost eight states. (It) lost even position of the recognized opposition. They are trying to replace their failures by aggressive words, by making cheap allegations against the government at times," Naidu said.

Forced to refer the land bill to a joint Parliamentary committee by the Congress-led Opposition, Naidu said the government was open to bringing in fresh changes in it provided suggestions were wise and did not alter the basic purpose of the legislation.

14:41   Pulses costlier by up to 64% in one year
Bucking the overall trend of easing inflation, pulses got costlier by up to 64 per cent in the first year of the Modi government across major metro cities, primarily due to fall in domestic production.

Amid forecast of a poor monsoon for the second consecutive year, the government is considering importing pulses through state-owned trading firms such as MMTC to boost domestic supply and check the rise in retail prices.

According to the data maintained by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the maximum increase in retail prices was witnessed in urad in the past one year, while tur, masoor, gram and moong dal prices have also shot up.

One of the major achievements of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government -- which is completing its one year in office -- has been the inflation control during the period.

As per the latest government data, the overall consumer price inflation dropped to its four-month low of 4.87 per cent in April, while wholesale price based inflation has been in the negative territory for six straight months.

While inflation has eased in a number of food articles, the Consumer Affairs Ministry data showed that pulses have been getting costlier considerably, at least in the metro cities.

13:08   No 'big bang' investment by Modi govt in first year: CII
As Narendra Modi government celebrates one year in office, industry body CII has said there has been no big-bang investments in the first year and issues on ease of doing business still need to be addressed.

Stating that investments will gradually come in, CII President Sumit Mazumder termed as "ambitious" the government's aim of notching up the country's ranking to 50 on the World Bank's ease of doing business index.

In an interview to PTI on the one-year performance of the Modi government, Mazumder said: "What has not shown is, no big bang investments have come on the ground. But that will take time.

"I would much rather see the government do a slow and gradual growth, scaled up gradually where all the structural issues are in place. How long it will take is difficult to tell, but based on my discussions with various people, we should definitely start seeing results by the third or fourth quarter of this year".

The CII President said he would like to see much more action being taken on Ease of Doing Business, to cut out the red tape.

"I really want to see that red tape to red carpet happen. I don't just want it to be statement. So that the application forms, inspectors, rigour that one has to go through to set up an industry is addressed, along with digitization of forms so that everything is quick".
