A Cairo court sentenced ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to death on Saturday on charges of spying for Iranian security services and breaking out of prison during the uprising four years ago.

The judge said he was referring the sentences to Egypt's mufti, a religious official who must approve capital punishment in the country.

The verdict was aired on state television. Morsi appeared in the courtroom with 27 other defendants. The ousted leader is already serving a 20-year sentence following his conviction on April 21 on charges linked to the killing of protesters outside a Cairo presidential palace in December 2012.
