Defamation case: Rahul to appear in Maharashtra court
May 08, 2015  09:41
Rahul Gandhi will appear in a court in Maharashtra for a hearing in a defamation case against him, even though the Supreme Court yesterday said he did not have to.

"RG will be in Bhiwandi this morning to honour commitment to the trial court," said a tweet from his new twitter handle @OfficeOfRG, launched yesterday.

This is the fourth tweet on the account that represents the Congress vice president's official debut on social media.

The Supreme Court yesterday stayed defamation proceedings against Mr Gandhi, who has been sued by an activist of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS -- the ruling BJP's ideological mentor -- for allegedly blaming the organization for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi while campaigning for the national election last year.

The court acted on Gandhi's petition to stay the defamation proceedings on the same grounds used by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy -- that it is a violation of his fundamental rights and freedom of speech.
