21:14   AIMIM will not last long in Maha politics: Pawar
NCP president Sharad Pawar today termed the performance of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen in Aurangabad municipal corporation election as just a fluke, and said that parties like AIMIM do not last long. "Parties like AIMIM do not last long (electorally) and may be out of the (political) arena within a year or two," Pawar said responding to a query on the performance of the Hyderabad-based party in the civic polls held last month.

Though the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance retained the civic body, the Assaduddin Owaisi-led party registered an impressive performance by winning 25 seats in its maiden outing. Taking a swipe at Shiv Sena and AIMIM, Pawar said the current political situation in the state was helping only these parties and not the common man.

Referring to the agrarian crisis in the state, the former Union minister said the government should waive loans of farmers as their situation has turned "grim" due to crop loss.

Pawar termed as "personal opinion" his party MLA Jitendra Awhad's statement questioning the credentials of veteran historian Babasaheb Purandare who was conferred with Maharashtra Bhushan award.

20:45   Who is 'Eeshwar' in whose name oath is taken? Law ministry stumped
Who is 'Eeshwar' in whose name top constitutional functionaries and legislators take oath of office? This RTI query stumped the Law Ministry, which said there is no constitutional provision defining the term.

RTI-applicant Shradhanand Yogacharya also raised another query, seeking to know the meaning of "Satyameva Jayate", the motto inscribed at the base of the national emblem.

The application, which was addressed to President's Secretariat, was transferred to Home Ministry which forwarded it to the law ministry.

Failing to get any satisfactory response, Shradhanand took the matter to the Central Information Commission where, during the hearing held through video conferencing, a law ministry official told him that they can only provide information which is part of the records.

Central Public Information Officer S K Chitkara also tried to convince the applicant that "Satyamev Jayate" was not part of any Constitutional provision and terms like "truth", "religion", "caste" were not defined in any part of the Constitution hence no information could be provided.

Facebook also said that internet.org is open to all content and application developers who meet "certain guidelines".

This follows criticism from free internet advocates that the social networking site was "hand-picking services" violating principles of net neutrality. Zuckerberg, who in the past had defended internet.org, said in his video blog posted today, that the programme supports itself.

"When people use free basic services, more of them then decide to pay to access the broader Internet and this enables operators to keep offering these basic services for free. It is not sustainable to offer the whole Internet for free," he said.

Nearly 350 AAP volunteers and leaders from Maharashtra quit on Monday in protest against the "murder of democracy' in the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, showing their support to expelled leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav.

"As many as 350 volunteers and leaders resigned from AAP and this figure would go up when we will start to sensitise everyone about democracy being murdered in AAP,' said Maruti Bhapkar, former state executive committee member of AAP unit in Maharashtra.

Bhapkar led the workers in the mass resignation programme held in Pune.

"We are now with Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan to strengthen their hands to float the concept of Swaraj throughout the country in a  true sense," he added.

"Not only from Pune, but volunteers from Mumbai, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Aurangabad, Navi Mumbai etc also hadcome to Pune to quit AAP,' he added.Manav Kamble, another former senior leader from AAP, has also joined hands with Bhapkar.

15:29   Was surprised by court order to search my residence: Parrikar
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said he was surprised after a local court issued a warrant to search his official residence in Delhi to trace former Goa minister Francisco Miccky Pacheco, who is reported to be absconding after conviction in a 2006 assault case.

"It was a surprise to me. I had moved into my official residence the earlier day," said Parrikar, responding to a question today. The local court which was hearing the petition on Pacheco, who is missing after being convicted for slapping a government servant, had on April 23 ordered the search of 10, Akbar Road in New Delhi after social activist and lawyer Aires Rodrigues had petitioned the court against delay by police in tracking down the ex-minister.

The order came after Rodrigues submitted to the court that there was "information" that Pacheco was "hiding" at 10, Akbar Road. It was, however, stayed by a higher court in Goa the same day. "The order is quashed... so I don't want to comment further. It is an issue which probably the investigating agency should work on. How does Defence Minister's residence come in the picture?," Parrikar replied.

Kumar Vishwas and his wife have been summoned by the Delhi Commission for Women after a party volunteer approached it saying "false rumours" of his illicit relationship with her were ruining her reputation.

The woman said she had written separate letters to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Delhi Police commissioner apprising them of the same.

13:11   MEA declines answer to RTI query on Obama visit expenses
An RTI query seeking details of expenses incurred by the Centre on hosting US President Barack Obama earlier this year has been rejected by the Ministry of External Affairs on the ground that such information is sensitive and may affect bilateral relations with the foreign country.

Mumbai-based activist Anil Galgali, who filed the query with the MEA, had sought details of the total expenses incurred by the Indian government on hosting the US President and the American contingent that accompanied him in January this year. He also sought information on the accommodation provided to the dignitaries and security personnel of Obama, besides details of the number of police personnel deployed and security arrangements made during his visit.

In response to his query, MEA's Deputy Chief Protocol Officer Rohit Rathish said every year the Indian government hosts various dignitaries from several countries and the visit of each dignitary is differentiated by various factors like the type of delegation visiting the country, the purpose of their visit, the manner in which the guest is hosted, the number of Indian cities the visitor goes to, among others.

"It would not be wrong to say that each visit by a foreign dignitary is unique. In such circumstances, the expenses incurred by the Indian government on different dignitaries are different and the issue is sensitive for the government. 11:15   Refer all files to me, Delhi Lt Guv Najeeb Jung tells Kejriwal
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has directed all officials and ministers of the Aam Aadmi Party-led government to refer all the files to him.

Jung, while referring to the Constitution, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 and Transaction of Business Rules, said the role of the chief minister and the council of ministers is to aid and advise him.

The tussle between Jung, who reports to the central government, and Kejriwal reportedly began soon after the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in February.

After taking charge, Kejriwal reportedly directed that files related to the police, public order and land -- subjects over which his government has no jurisdiction -- should be routed through him. The Lieutenant Governor reportedly wrote back in April saying that he was not obliged to do so.

This was followed by Kejriwal's letter to all departments not to bother the Lieutenant Governor's office with files that can be dealt with by the chief minister. On Sunday, Jung directed the Chief Minister's office to withdraw the order.

10:19   Swachh Bharat Abhiyan losing steam?
It seems the fanfare with which the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched is now losing steam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his ambitious campaign last year on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary.

His mission was carried forward by various ministries and government officials across the country in a grand manner.

However, Modi's pet project does not appear to have enthused a majority of states as only three of the 11 chief ministers turned up for the last week meeting of the sub-group formed for the purpose.

08:50   5,800 migrants rescued in Mediterranean
Another 5,800 migrants desperate to reach Europe were rescued this weekend as they tried to cross the Mediterranean on rickety boats, more than 2,150 of them today, the Italian coastguard said.

The number rescued this weekend was one of the highest recorded in recent years, raising fears that the tide of people risking their lives to reach Europe from Africa and the Middle East has not been slowed by recent disasters.

On April 12 and 13 alone, more than 6,000 people were rescued.

Not all those trying to reach Europe made it, as the bodies of eight migrants were found on board two of the vessels today, the coastguard said.

It was unclear how they died, but migrants face many dangers and extreme conditions on board overcrowded, flimsy vessels that set sail from Libya to Italy.

Two other people drowned after they jumped into the sea to rush towards the rescue teams, the coastguard said. Today's rescues came as the Libyan coastguard intercepted five boats carrying 500 people and ordered them to return.

Another 50 migrants reached the Italian island of Lampedusa, the closest to north Africa's shores, on Sunday.

08:38   PM Modi to lead prayers on Buddha Purnima today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Monday lead the nation in prayers and solidarity with the people of India and Nepal on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

According to a release, a special prayer to express solidarity with the people of India and Nepal to mark the International Buddha Purnima Diwas 2015 will be organised here.

An ambitious proposal to transform the Buddha Stupa here into a centre dedicated to the life and teachings of the Buddha would also be discussed at the gathering which is to be attended by ambassadors, MPs, scholars and Buddhist monks from across the globe.

Announcing the "extraordinary" celebrations, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that the "international community has always looked up to India for taking a lead as this is the country where Buddha attained enlightenment and where Buddhism was born".

Responding to queries from reporters, the minister, meanwhile, dismissed any notion that the event was aimed at delivering "political messages" across the border and said that organising it was "natural" on the part of India.

He rued that there had been little effort or government initiative to mark Buddha Purnima and said that the celebrations would be an annual affair from now on.

"It is going to begin from this year. It is incumbent upon India to take the lead. Buddhist countries look up to India for this guidance," he said.
