An explosion in Manhattan's East Village has caused at least 12 injuries, Mayor Bill de Blasio and fire officials said on Thursday.

The incident was reported about 3:20 pm local time, but it is unclear what the cause may be or if there are any fatalities.

Three people were rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, CBS New York reported.

The explosion occurred in a five-story residential and commercial building on Second Avenue, not far from New York University, and fire could be seen tearing through at least two buildings at the location.

In total, four buildings were affected, two partially collapsed, according to De Blasio. A witness told CBS New York there was an odor of gas in the area after the explosion.

However, FDNY commissioner Daniel Nigro said at an afternoon press conference that no gas leak had been reported.
