16:32   BJP MLA in J-K assembly insists on taking oath in name of Vaishno Devi
As the 12th Jammu and Kashmir Assembly assembled today, BJP MLA Ravinder Raina triggered a controversy when he took the name of Mata Vaishno Devi while taking oath as MLA in the name of God, drawing objections from the opposition.

Raina, who is an MLA from Noushera Assembly segment and head of state BJP youth wing, came upto the Speaker's chair and took oath in the name of Mata Vaishnodevi and said "I do swear in the name of Mata Vaishnodevi".

CPI(M) MLA M Y Tarigami objected to him first and said there is a prescribed format for taking oath in the name of God (Ishwar).

"It was not provided to swear in the name of Vaishnodevi. The member can swear in the name of Ishwar," Tarigami said. Others from opposition, including National Conference and Congress, supported Tarigami over objection.

However, Protem Speaker Mohmmad Shafi intervened asking Raina to take oath in the name of God. Raina tried to convince opposition members and said "I am a worshipper of Ma Vaishnodevi and consider her as my Ishwar".

He told the House that some people take oath in the names of Jesus and Allah, why can't he take the oath in the name of Mata Vaishnodevi. "If I am doing that it will be true respect to my Ishwar," he added. His statement drew clappings from the people sitting in the visitors gallery on the stand of Raina, raising objection from opposition NC benches.

They said that it is not the meeting of a political party and the member needs to advise his supporters to take the proceedings of the house seriously. Later, after the intervention of the Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, Raina took oath in Hindi in the name of Ishwar.

Reason to cheer, folks.

There has been a 30 per cent rise in the population of tigers in the country and their current count stands at 2,226, the Lok Sabha was informed. Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar informed the House that 22 poachers were also killed last year in encounters with enforcement agencies.

Responding to a supplementary, Javadekar said the government wants to make law on poaching and wildlife more stringent and was bringing a comprehensive amendment to it.

Giving figures, the Minister said in 2012, deaths of 89 tigers were reported but the figure went down to 68 in 2013. The numbers witnessed a jump in 2014 when 78 deaths were reported and 17 tigers have died so far this year, he said.

09:47   A $400 million defamation suit is coming against Sahara
US-based Mirach Capital today said it is initiating a USD 400 million defamation lawsuit against the Sahara group, while alleging that the failed financing deal with the Indian conglomerate has caused "irreparable harm" and "shaken investor confidence".

Accusing Mirach Capital of cheating and forgery in the failed USD 2.05 billion loan arrangement, Sahara had also said last month that it has initiated legal action against the US-based firm.

The crisis-hit group had alleged that Mirach and its CEO Saransh Sharma's criminal conduct and lack of financial capabilities to honour such huge commitments led to the breaking down of the deal, leading to the loss of precious time, resources and position of Sahara.

In a press release issued today, Mirach has now accused Sahara of hurling "unfounded allegations" against it despite "factual evidence" that completely dispels Sahara's "trumped up" allegations of forgery.

Stating that the Lucknow-based company and its representatives continue to attempt to discredit Mirach and its CEO Sharma in the court of public opinion, Mirach said it is "announcing a defamation lawsuit to the amount of USD 400 million against the Sahara Group, as well as a news organisation believed to be a collaborator."

Mirach further accused Sahara's representatives of breaching an exclusivity contract with it following public comments by its Indian-origin CEO Sharma regarding the group's acquisition strategy of the Sahara assets.

08:53   Sonia, Manmohan to lead march against Land Bill today
In an attempt to corner the Narendra Modi government, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday will march with leaders of at least ten parties from Parliament House to Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest against the Land Acquisition Ordinance.

Along with the Congress, Janata Dal (United), Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, CPI(M), DMK, INLD and some other parties will participate in the protest march.

The Opposition parties have united over the contentious bill and are trying their level best to project the Modi-led BJP as an anti-farmer party.

The leaders of the parties will submit a memorandum against the new land bill to President Pranab Mukherjee.

Sources in the Opposition said that Congress is playing a key role in the protest including the finalisation of the draft of the memorandum.

08:50   SC to pronounce verdict on quota for Jats today
The Supreme Court is likely to pronounce judgment on Tuesday on a batch of petitions challenging the validity of the reservation for Jats by including them in other backward class (OBC) category.

The judgment, reserved on December 17, 2014, will be pronounced by a bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman.

The batch of petitioners, while challenging the United Progressive Alliance government`s decision to extend reservation to Jats by including them in OBC category, had contended that Jats were politically and socially advanced and the decision to extend reservation to them was politically and electorally motivated.

The UPA government had announced reservation for Jats on the eve of general elections held in May 2014.

Ironically, the Narendra Modi government too backed the UPA decision to extend OBC reservation to Jats saying that it was not inspired by electoral considerations but a bonafide decision in public interest.

04:00   France blocks five sites accused of condoning terrorism
France has blocked five websites accused of "condoning terrorism," the interior ministry said on Monday, the first time the French new government has used its broad new security powers since the January Paris attacks.

The banning order was given to Internet service providers, who had 24 hours to take "all necessary measures to block the listing of these addresses" under the new rules.

One of the sites al-Hayat Media Center is accused of having links to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) armed group, the ministry said. The site islamic-news.info has also been blocked since the end of last week, broadcaster France24 reported. Users trying to reach the site find a message that reads, "You are being redirected to this official website since your computer was about to connect with a page that provokes terrorist acts or condones terrorism publicly."

The new government powers were introduced as part of a package of security laws that were approved by parliament in November 2014 and took effect in February.

Critics argued that the latest measures could breach citizens' rights by bypassing the need for a judge to issue the banning orders. Octave Klaba, who founded the company that hosts Islamic-news.info, said in a message posted on Twitter that he wasn't informed of the government's action, and called the measure a "nuclear bomb," according to France24

01:55   Dozens killed in ethno-religious clash in central Nigeria
Police say they suspect a group of Fulani herdsmen shot and killed 45 people in the latest clash between mainly Muslim herders and predominantly Christian farmers in central Nigeria.

Survivors put the death toll at nearer 100. Farmer Orji Dooga said he counted 95 bodies from Sunday's attack on the village Egba in Benue state.

Assistant Superintendent Austin Ezeani said Monday that most victims were children, women and elderly people.

Thousands have been killed over the years in ongoing land disputes between the two groups.

Human Rights Watch has blamed the government for not prosecuting perpetrators and allowing the cycle of violence to continue as aggrieved victims launch revenge attacks.

The Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has invoked this lack of justice as an excuse for its attacks on Christians.
