The Bombay High Court on Friday said the Maharashtra state government must NOT implement its policy decision on permitting bars and pubs to remain open all night in non-residential areas until the court considers the impact of such a move on the safety of women.

The judges had earlier noted that the term of the Dharmadhikari  Committee on women's safety had expired but they would have to ask it tolook into the matter.

Stating there were limited resources available and that such a move would put enormous pressure on police machinery, the HC had asked the government to file an affidavit in this regard within three weeks. Earlier, the court had said that allowing nightlife in the city may lead to situations where womens safety is a concern. In a city like Mumbai, a situation will arise, the court has said.
