21:59   Centre 'harassing' Delhi govt: Kejriwal
In a stinging attack on the Centre, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said no government in history with such an overwhelming mandate had been "harassed" the way AAP dispensation is being "targeted" and accused the BJP of reneging on its poll promises.

He also made a politically loaded attack on Narendra Modi during his reply to the debate on Budget proposals on the last day of the session saying peoples' view has been that the Prime Minister was creating hurdles for the AAP government.

He said he has been requesting for an appointment with Modi "who seems to be too busy" and also slammed Lt Governor Najeeb Jung for frequently declaring his government's orders as "null and void". "We pass orders and the Lt Governor declares them null and void.

Even the Congress had not harassed the BJP when it was in power in Delhi. I have been trying to meet the PM but it seems I have a bad luck. He's too busy," Kejriwal said.

He also held Modi responsible for "creating" a peculiar situation with Delhi having two home secretaries and two heads of elite Anti-Corruption Branch.

21:31   Police may approach court seeking lie detector test on Tharoor
Investigators probing the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar may move a local court seeking lie detector test on her husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

Six persons including three "prime witnesses" in the case were already put through lie detector (polygraph) test and sources indicated that the police may go for carrying out the test on Tharoor. When asked about it, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said, he was not aware of any such move, but said it was upto the investigating officer to do what he deemed fit.

As per the procedure, the prosecution will have to move a plea before the court seeking permission to carry out the test and it will depend on whether Tharoor gives his consent for it or not.

Last month, the Delhi police had approached a city court for permission to carry out lie detector test on Narain Singh, who is domestic help of Sunanda's husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, driver Bajrangi and family friend Sanjay Dewan.

20:34   Criminal nexus between Lalit Modi and Raje family: Ramesh
The Dholpur Palace row escalated today with the Congress raising the pitch for the sacking of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, saying there was a "criminal nexus" between her family and former IPL boss Lalit Modi, a charge rubbished by the BJP.

On a day of claims and counter claims, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh told reporters in Delhi, "There has been a criminal nexus between Lalit Modi and the Vasundhara Raje family." Declaring that Congress will not stop disclosures till a "closure" is done by the BJP by removing Raje,

Ramesh released some fresh documents including one of 1949 which showed that the Dholpur Palace was owned by the Rajasthan government.

For the second consecutive day, Ramesh accused Raje and her family of "forcible, illegal occupation" of the Dholpur Palace along with Lalit Modi through a private company.

In Jaipur, BJP Rajasthan president Ashok Parnami showed documents, saying a court order of November 22, 1958 clearly proved that the Dholpur Palace was handed over to Hemant Singh and later to Dushyant Singh, son of Raje.

20:28   Left Front sweeps by-poll in Tripura
The ruling Left Front in Tripura has swept the assembly by-polls while the ruling Congress won the lone seat in Meghalaya.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist, the major constituent in the ruling Left Front, won both the LACs in Tripura in the by-election, results of which were declared on Tuesday.   Anjan Das and Ramu Das (both CPI-M) won from Surma and Pratapgarh (SC) assembly constituencies in Tripura by comfortably defeating their nearest Bharatiya Janata Party rivals Ashis Das and Moushumi Das respectively.

In Meghalaya, Bluebell R Sangma of ruling Indian National Congress (Indian national Congress) won the by-election from Chokpot constituency in South Garo Hills by defeating the nearest National People's Party rival Phillipole  D Marak.

The significance about the results of by-poll in Tripura is that the BJP candidates in both the LACs have clinched the second position replacing the Congress.

20:05   Plea for declaring Indira's murder a suicide rejected after 29 years
Pending for nearly 29 years, a petition seeking declaring Indira Gandhi's assassination a "suicide through arranged murder" to facilitate Rajiv Gandhi's elevation as prime minister was dismissed at its first hearing by the Gujarat High Court after nobody pressed the case.

Filed in 1986, two years after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the petition came up for hearing for the first time yesterday by a division bench headed by acting Chief Justice V M Sahai, who took no time in dismissing it.

"The prayer of the petitioner is to declare that Mrs Indira Gandhi committed suicide, which cannot be granted. The petition is accordingly dismissed," Justice Sahai said, throwing out the petition. "No one has put in appearance to press this petition," the court noted.

The plea alleged that the country's first and only woman prime minister had "committed suicide through arranged murder to give power to her son Rajiv Gandhi as hereditary successor and the elections of 1984 were based on national sacrifice made by Indira Gandhi."

Law Minister D V Sadanana Gowda today said the issue of reversing a Supreme Court ruling which had upheld same-sex marriages in India as illegal is not pending before his ministry, remarks which come after the US' apex court legalised gay marital unions in that country.

"Biggest load of bull**** I have been hearing", Indian cricket team's director Ravi Shastri said today, dismissing reports of a rift between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Shastri said the two players have utmost respect for each other and the Indian team was "one honest bunch" who believed in playing for each other.

"You ought to see the respect they have for each other. Kohli is young, flamboyant, in-your-face character. He will learn with the exposure he gets. He is only 26, let him settle into captaincy for a year or two," he said.

Shastri spoke highly of current ODI captain Dhoni, calling him an all-time legend, who played on his own terms.

"Dhoni is an all-time legend. He is the kind of bloke who plays on his own terms. It's best exemplified in the manner he quit Test cricket. I would have known many who would have loved to go for a 100-Test milestone," he said. Asked whether young players like Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have settled in the team, Shastri said their best is yet to come.

14:37   Last-minute efforts on as Greece set to default on IMF loan today
The head of the European Commission made a last-minute offer to try to persuade Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to accept a bailout deal he has rejected before a referendum on Sunday which EU partners say will be a choice of whether to stay in the euro.

But Greek government sources said the leftist premier stood by his rejection of the creditors' conditions and Greece would default on a crucial repayment due to the International Monetary Fund on Tuesday, plunging it deeper into financial crisis.

EU and Greek government sources said Jean-Claude Juncker had offered to convene an emergency meeting of euro zone finance ministers on Tuesday to approve an aid payment to prevent Athens defaulting, if Tsipras sent a written acceptance of the terms.

He also dangled the prospect of a negotiation on debt rescheduling later this year if Athens said "yes'.

The last-ditch bid from Brussels came after tens of thousands of Greeks, mobilised by Tsipras' Syriza party, demonstrated in Athens against further austerity.

Tsipras broke off negotiations with the Commission, the IMF and the European Central Bank and announced early on Saturday a referendum on the bailout terms next Sunday, giving voters just one week to debate the fundamental issues at stake. Under Juncker's offer, Tsipras would have to send a written acceptance by Tuesday of the terms published by the EU executive on Sunday and agree to campaign in favour of the bailout in the planned July 5 referendum.

09:45   Rupee gains 8 paise against dollar on foreign capital inflows
Snapping its five-day falling spree, the rupee rose 8 paise to 63.76 against the US dollar in early trade today on fresh selling of the American currency by exporters and banks amid a higher opening in the domestic equity market.

Selling of the American currency by exporters and banks supported the rupee, but the dollar's firmness against euro and other currencies overseas capped the gains, dealers said.

Besides, a higher opening in domestic equity market helped the rupee, they added. The rupee depreciated 20 paise to close at 63.84 in yesterday's trade due to the looming debt default crisis in Greece amid month-end demand for the greenback from importers.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 117.80 points, or 0.42 per cent, to trade at 27,762.95 in early trade.

#SelfieWithDaughter was trending worldwide with parents tweeting pictures soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about it in his Mann ki Baat radio address on Sunday.

But it was not appreciated by all. Activist Kavita Krishnan in a tweet accused the PM of 'stalking daughters', and there was another post that brought back memories of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Daughter of Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was brutally murdered by a violent Hindu mob on 28 February, 2002, shared a picture on Facebook. Nishrin Jafri Hussain shared a photo with her father.

In her post, she said, "SelfieWithDaughter: This one will haunt him for ever."

Ehsan Jafri's wife Zakia had Modi, who was the chief minister of Gujarat during the riots, for being complicit in the violence.  However, the SIT probe gave a clean chit to Modi.

02:30   How World War III became possible
It was in August 2014 that the real danger began, and that we heard the first warnings of war.

That month, unmarked Russian troops covertly invaded eastern Ukraine, where the separatist conflict had grown out of its control.

The Russian air force began harassing the neighboring Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which are members of NATO.

The US pledged that it would uphold its commitment to defend those countries as if they were American soil, and later staged military exercises a few hundred yards from Russia's border.

Both sides came to believe that the other had more drastic intentions.

02:30   US visa processing back to speed after computer glitch
US visa processing has returned to full strength after hardware problems, the State Department said Monday, noting that 410,000 visas were issued in a week as officials scrambled to clear a huge backlog.

Deputy spokesman Mark Toner said the State Department does "regret the inconvenience to travelers who are waiting for visas as well as their families and US businesses that have been affected by this problem."

He complimented the Consular Affairs Bureau's "exemplary work" in addressing the computer problems and whittling down the visa backlog.

A team of about 100 computer experts had been working to resolve the hardware failure, which emerged at a State Department facility in the United States on June 9.

The hardware failure had been preventing processing and transmitting the mandatory security-related biometric data checks.

About 50,000 applications for visas are received daily by US embassies and consulates around the world.

Toner said that the US issued more than 410,000 non-immigrant visas from June 23 through June 29.

"Consular staff around the world worked throughout the weekend to diminish our backlog, the bulk of which has now been cleared," he added.

02:29   S&P cuts Greece rating after referendum called
Standard & Poor's downgraded Greece's credit rating deeper into junk territory today, saying the government's decision to hold a referendum on creditor proposals brought it closer to default.

"We interpret Greece's decision to hold a referendum on official creditors' loan proposals as a further indication that the Tsipras government will prioritize domestic politics over financial and economic stability, commercial debt payments, and eurozone membership," said S&P.

It cut Greece's already deeply-junk rating to 'CCC-' from 'CCC'.

Absent unforeseeable favorable changes in Greece's circumstances, "a commercial default is inevitable within the next six months," the ratings firm said. In a rating downgrade earlier in June, S&P saw the likelihood of a commercial default within the next 12 months.

S&P said that the inability of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's government to agree with its official creditors on a loan program was a sign that Athens would likely miss its payment obligations due on June 30, including the 1.5 billion euros (USD 1.7 billion) to the International Monetary Fund.

02:21   Uber France CEO, GM arrested for running illegal taxi company
Uber France CEO Thibaud Simphal and Uber Europe GM Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty were both taken into custody today in Paris. The AFP first broke the news. The police started investigating Uber in November 2014 and raided its office in Paris in March 2015.

The two executives were charged with two different allegations.

First, according to them, Uber is running illegal taxi operations.

Uber has been struggling with this charge in many countries, starting with the US. In 2010, the company had to change its original name from UberCab to Uber as taxi companies didnt want to create any confusion.

Second, the police said that Uber France is concealing digital documents. It's hard to tell what the police was looking for when they raided the French office in March. But apparently, some documents are missing and slowing down the investigation.

02:10   Britain, US say no UN exit from Darfur
Britain and the United States said today it was too soon for UN peacekeepers to leave Sudan's troubled Darfur region as the Security Council extended the mission for another year.

The United Nations is holding talks to address Sudan's demands for an exit strategy for the 17,000-strong UNAMID force run jointly with the African Union.

But the resolution unanimously adopted by the 15-member council made clear that the Sudanese government must show progress in resolving the Darfur conflict before any pullout can be decided.

"Any discussion of an exit for the mission at this stage is premature," British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft told reporters.

There has been an upsurge in violence in Darfur as the Sudanese army has waged an offensive to root out rebel groups, with at least 78,000 people driven from their homes this year, according to the UN.

"2014 saw the worst level of suffering in the last ten years," said Rycroft. "Now is not the time to cut and run."

02:09   India, Thailand discuss joint venture in defence manufacturing
India and Thailand have discussed possibilities of joint ventures in defence manufacturing as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj wrapped up her three-day visit to the country.

Swaraj and the Thai leadership during bilateral consultations here discussed the possibilities of joint ventures in the defence sector ahead of the proposed visit of Thai defence minister Gen (Rtd) Prawit Wongsuwon to India this year, official sources said.

The current defence cooperation between the two countries comprises regular joint exercises/joint maritime patrols near the international boundary to counter terrorism, piracy and smuggling, training of officers at each other's armed forces training institutions and participation as observers in military exercises.

Now, India is looking forward to joint ventures in defence manufacturing, the sources said.

The initiative is significant keeping in view the growing Chinese influence in Thailand and its military might in Asia-Pacific.

02:09   Water poses a nightmare scenario for Pakistan today!
Back in 2011, the American actor George Clooney recalled asking Barack Obama to identify the one thing that kept him up at night.

"Pakistan," replied the US president.

Obama did not elaborate. We can assume, however, that he was alluding to the various nightmare scenarios that spooked Washington officialdom back then, including loose nukes and state disintegration.

Today, Pakistan should still be keeping President Obama up at night -- but not because of those aforementioned fears, which have always been purely hypothetical and somewhat fanciful. Instead, what should be causing sleepless nights for Obama -- and concerned humanity overall -- is water scarcity. It is a nightmare scenario that is all too real, and all but inevitable, for Pakistan.
