Contrary to the decision of the Union government and the Central Board of Secondary Education that recommended mandatory Yoga session in schools, the Assam government has decided against it.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, "The state government in principle is in favour of practising yoga or any other physical education, but not for making it compulsory in government schools and other educational institutions across the state."

Gogoi pointed out that Union Minister for Human Resources Smriti Irani should accord equal priority to yoga as well as extending financial assistance to model schools in the state as the Union government had decided to stop funding to model schools set up for the benefit of rural poor students across the country including Assam.
