Commuters in Mumbai faced major inconvenienced on Monday following Nitesh Rane-led Swabhiman union's call for a one-day "taxi and auto bandh" to protest against cab aggregators like Uber and Ola.

However, it is yet to be seen if the strike is successful as one of the biggest unions led by A L Quadros is opposing the lockdown and has appealed to all drivers to ply their cabs "fearlessly".

A million passengers who depend on autos and taxis to travel to their workplace could be hit hard. Heavy rain too is adding to the commuters' woes. Besides, the largest auto union led by Shashank Rao has called for a strike on Wednesday.

A day before the strike, two private cabs were found damaged near Cigarette Factory in Andheri East on Sunday morning and the needle of suspicion points to the Swabhiman union, sources said. The union may also force autorickshaws to go off roads on Monday. Although Rane's union is not a big one, the fear of violence can force most taxis and autos off the roads, sources said.

On the eve of the strike, Rane tweeted: "Black n yellow taxis hv been th identity of Mumbai city 4 generations nw..can we just c them disappear 1 day Becz of these illegal pvt cabs? Rickshaw Taxi strike is on.. For the existence of Black n yellow taxi n rickshaws..we gave time but no response."
