23:30   Iraq forces battle ISIS, extra US troops heading to Anbar
Iraqi forces battled jihadis on several fronts Thursday and were poised to receive the help of 450 extra U.S. troops slated for deployment near Ramadi.

Washington's decision to send more advisers and trainers to Iraq failed however to silence critics who say the White House lacks a strategy to combat ISIS.

A year after a jihadi-led offensive saw the government lose control over swathes of Iraq, military operations to weaken ISIS were experiencing mixed fortunes.

The autonomous Kurdistan region's peshmerga forces pushed south and west of Kirkuk on the back of intensive bombing by Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition warplanes, security officials said.

One of the targets was a bomb-making workshop ISIS had set up after their main car bomb factory in nearby Hawijah was completely levelled in a coalition airstrike last week, one official said.

22:33   New Ramadhan rules to help Nordic Muslims in midnight sun
Muslims in the Nordic region can expect new guidelines for coping with a sun that never sets ahead of the holy fasting month of Ramadhan, a Swedish Muslim association said Thursday.

Ramadan begins on June 18 this year -- three days before the longest day of the year -- when the sun blazes around the clock above the Arctic Circle and only sets for a few hours further south, presenting a problem for Muslims who are meant to fast until sunset.

"We've got two difficult questions, not just when you can break the fast in the north but also when you should start fasting," Mohammed Kharraki, a spokesman for Sweden's Islamic Association, told AFP.

"You're supposed to start fasting before the sun rises, at dawn. But there is no real dawn in the summer months in Stockholm."

In previous years Muslims in sub-Arctic towns like Kiruna were advised to break their fast at the same time as people in the south but a meeting of Swedish and European imams in northern Sweden this week recommended a new approach.

Just in: Singer Mika Singh has been arrested for assaulting a doctor during a live performance in April 2015. The singer was taken to the Indrapuri police station in Delhi, but is likely to released soon since it is a bailable offence.

TV reports say that the incident happened during the Mika Singh Live-in-concert which was coordinated by the Delhi Ophthalmological Society as a part of the three-day conference.

The doctor who was assaulted, apparently kept coming on to where the women were dancing and was creating a nuisance of himself. Mika told the police he had warned the doctor not to do so, but his advice went unheeded. Mika then called the doctor on to the stage and slapped him hard.

The doctors association IMA has asked for a boycott on the singer and demanded his arrest.

13:19   In police custody at undisclosed location Jitender Tomar grilled again
Former Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar was today grilled in Faizabad for the second day in the fake degree case with Delhi police trying to gather evidence on the veracity of his documents.

The AAP leader, who was arrested on Tuesday and remanded in four-day police custody, was taken to the Saket Degree College in Faizabad where documents were being examined, police said.

Tomar, who was brought to Faizabad yesterday, was kept at an undisclosed location during the night.

Earlier, it was reported that he was being taken to Munger in Bihar for verification of his degrees after initial interrogation in Faizabad yesterday.

The RML Awadh University, from where he claimed to have graduated, yesterday denied having any such record. A Delhi Police team had examined documents at the Awadh University Registrar's office and taken them in a sealed cover.

Stating its willingness to cooperate with the ongoing probe into the case, the university stood by its earlier stand, saying Tomar's BSc degree was a forged one. "One Pradeep Kumar had filed an RTI asking for verification of a set of documents related to Tomar's mark sheets and degree. The university had replied on January 22 saying it had nothing of that sort in its records. We stand by our previous stand," its media in-charge S N Shukla said.

He was replying to a question on Tomar's B.Sc degree. Tomar had also claimed to have completed his LLB degree from VNSL Studies, a law college affiliated to Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University of Bihar.

On the way to Faizabad, Tomar had yesterday maintained that the allegations against him were false and accused the Centre of a "conspiracy".

Tomar, who quit as Delhi Law Minister after his arrest yesterday, claimed that his degrees were "genuine". 49-year-old Tomar, MLA from Delhi's Trinagar constituency and a first-time minister, was remanded in four-day police custody by a Delhi court on Tuesday.

13:01   US court to hear arguments against Sonia in 1984 riots case in August
A US appeals court will hear oral arguments in August in a lawsuit against Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The lawsuit brought by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) alleges that Gandhi shielded and protected the perpetrators of the anti-Sikh riots that followed the assassination of former Prime Indian Minister Indira Gandhi.

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals will hear the oral arguments on August 18 on several issues including whether the rights group has associational standing to file the lawsuit.

In June 2014, a federal judge had dismissed the lawsuit against Gandhi ruling that SFJ has no standing to bring the lawsuit and that Gandhi is not liable under the Torture Victims Protection Act (TVPA) for the allegations leveled against her in the lawsuit.

12:02   Rajnath, Parrikar, Doval in closed-door meeting
Just in: Meeting at the home ministry on right now, chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and NSA Ajit Doval in attendance.

A day after the Indian Army's retaliatory strike against insurgents believed to be behind the Manipur ambush, India and Myanmar are differing in their stand on where the operation exactly happened. While Myanmar claims that Indian soldiers did not cross into its territory, India continues to insist that the terror camps which were destroyed in the operation were in Myanmar.

Parrikar said on Thursday morning that the Indian Army's operation to neutralise two camps of militants on Tuesday has led to a "change in mindset."

11:40   Jitender Tomar denied bail, remains in police custody till June 16
Delhi Law minister fake degree case: The Delhi Sessions Court rejects Jitender Tomar's bail plea hearing. The bail plea will now be heard on June 16. The former Delhi law minister moved a Delhi court against his arrest. Tomar resigned on Tuesday night as law minister of the Delhi government for allegedly faking a law degree.

Police today took Tomar to Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh yesterday as part of the investigation into the allegation that he forged his graduation and law degrees. He was taken by train from the capital around midnight to Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow and from there by road to Faizabad last morning. The police said they needed to take him there for a spot verification and questioning.

Tomar has emphatically denied the accusations. "My degree is absolutely genuine. It is a conspiracy by the BJP and the central government. Yes, they are not letting the AAP government work," he told reporters yesterday.

Tomar sent his resignation to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after a Delhi court sent him to four days in police custody on Tuesday night, saying he was resigning because he did not want the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's image to be tarnished.

11:25   Parrikar to Pak: Those who fear India's new posture are reacting
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar reacts to Pakistan's warning to India over the Myanmar operation. Parrikar said today that those who fear India's new posture have started reacting.

On Myanmar's statement that operation was carried out outside the country, India has continued to assert that the operation was carried out in Myanmar. Parrikar said on Thursday morning that the Indian Army's operation to neutralise two camps of militants on Tuesday has led to a "change in mindset."

"Change requires a change in mindset. A simple action against insurgents has changed the mindset of the security scenario of the country," the Defence Minister said.

Terming Myanmar's stand as "diplomatic statement", India confirmed that the operation was "carried out successfully by Indian Army and two camps running in Myanmar were destroyed".

Parrikar also refused to divulge any details about the operation, but asserted that the operation by the army had "changed the mindset towards India".

This comes even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Minister of State of the PMO, Jitendra Singh, to visit Manipur and take stock of situation.

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is also slated to visit Myanmar to discuss further "joint action". Reports suggest he will also visit Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

"According to the information sent by Tatmadaw (the Myanmarese army) battalions on the ground, we have learned that the military operation was performed on the Indian side at India-Myanmar border," AFP quoted Zaw Htay, director of Myanmar's presidential office, as saying in a Facebook post. 09:30   KFC among top eateries flouting environmental laws
India Today reports: In the past one year, about 100 top-of-the-line eateries, restaurants and commercial establishments -- including KFC and Cafe Coffee Day -- have been found flouting environmental laws.

But despite clear instructions from the green watchdog to down their shutters, the authorities didn't take action against them in 90 per cent cases.

Whenever Delhi Pollution Control Committee asks such polluting units to shut shop, it tells Delhi Jal Board and power discoms to disconnect supplies and the area SDMs -- who report to the divisional commissioner -- to seal the premises.

But in the past 12 months, neither of these agencies or officials acted in 90 per cent cases. The result: the defaulting units were free to poison Delhi's air and wasting huge quantities of water.

08:57   Pranab on 5-day Shimla retreat from today
President Pranab Mukherjee will be away on a five-day sojourn from today in the quiet climes of the 'Retreat Building' surrounded with thick pine forests near Shimla.

Himachal Pradesh Governor Kalyan Singh will host a cultural programme and banquet in honour of the President on June 12.

The President will host a reception for senior dignitaries of the state, ministers and officials on June 14.

The redeeming feature of this building is that it is purely a wooden structure with 'dhajji' wall construction.

08:55   Oman test awaits India in FIFA World Cup qualifiers
An acid test awaits the Indian football team as it gets ready to host higher-ranked Oman in the second round opening match of AFC qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Though India have made progress under Englishman Stephen Constantine, beating Nepal in a two-legged preliminary qualifier in March, the chief coach knows it's going to require an extraordinary effort to emerge with a victory against Oman who, at 101, are ranked 40 places higher than the hosts in the pecking order.

The side will be led by Arnab Mondal and not Subrata Paul, Constantine said on the eve of the match.

The Indians have been training with renewed vigour for these matches. Last Saturday, Constantine put the team through a boot camp organised by the Indian Army on the ASC campus here. It was a team-building exercise, meant to help push the side over the line.

In the four meetings against Oman so far, India have conceded 11 goals while winning just one fixture, losing two and drawing one.

08:53   Fake degree: Session court to hear Tomar's plea today
A session court in Delhi will on Thursday hear the petition by former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar challenging his arrest in the alleged fake degree case.

In the application filed before the sessions court on Wednesday, Tomar alleged that police had arrested him in violation of prescribed procedure under the law.

Additional Sessions Judge Sanjeev Jain refused to give an urgent hearing to Tomar's plea and said that the matter will
be heard on Thursday.

49-year-old Tomar was arrested on Tuesday by Delhi Police on a FIR registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Bar Council of Delhi for allegedly forging documents, including educational degrees, to enrol as an advocate.

He was remanded to four-day police custody till June 13 by a magisterial court.

Police had sought five-day custody of Tomar saying his educational certificates relating to law degree were "fabricated" and he was required to be taken to Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh and Bhagalpur in Bihar to ascertain his educational qualification.

Police had told the court that educational certificates which Tomar claimed to be true were fabricated and during their initial probe, the authorities who signed those certificates have denied their genuineness.

01:51   Ebola spikes again in Guinea, Sierra Leone: WHO
The number of Ebola cases has risen in Guinea and Sierra Leone for the second consecutive week, the World Health Organization said today.

In Guinea, 16 new cases were found in the week ending June 7, with 15 more found in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

In the previous week, 13 new cases had been found in Guinea, a clear increase on the nine reported a week before that.

The pattern was similar in Sierra Leone, where 12 new cases were found in the last week of May compared to only three the previous week.

"This is the second consecutive weekly increase in case incidence," the WHO said.

Ebola has killed 11,158 of the 27,237 people infected, the WHO said in its latest situation report.

The number of health workers affected in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia has risen to 869, of whom 507 have died, since the current epidemic broke out in west Africa in December 2013

Liberia was declared Ebola-free in May, but hopes that Sierra Leone and Guinea would quickly follow suit have been dashed in recent weeks.

The global health agency also voiced concern that the areas affected in Guinea have increased.

In the week leading up to June 7, two new cases were confirmed in Guinea's capital Conakry, which had been Ebola-free during the three previous weeks.

01:42   Former brain-eating Papua tribe offers clues on mad cow disease
Research involving a former brain-eating tribe from Papua New Guinea is helping scientists better understand mad cow disease and other so-called prion conditions and may also offer insights into Parkinson's and dementia.

People of the Fore tribe, studied by scientists from Britain and Papua New Guinea, have developed genetic resistance to a mad cow-like disease called kuru, which was spread mostly by the now abandoned ritual of eating relatives' brains at funerals.

Experts say the cannibalistic practice led to a major epidemic of kuru prion disease among the Fore people, which at its height in the late 1950s caused the death of up to 2 per cent of the population each year.

The United Nations on Wednesday warned that violent attacks on international peacekeepers and civilians in Sudan's conflict-torn Darfur region have been increasing while tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee the fighting.

UN officials and diplomats say the Sudanese government has become increasingly confrontational toward the United Nations and the West over the joint UN-African Union mission to Darfur (Unamid), which Khartoum wants shut.

Deputy UN peacekeeping chief Edmond Mulet told the 15-member Security Council that there has been negligible progress in peace efforts for Darfur, adding there was a worrying rise in attacks on Unamid.

UN chief Ban Ki Moon's latest progress report on the force said there were 60 "incidents and hostile attacks against Unamid" in the three months to May 15, compared with 46 in the previous quarter.

00:38   Polish government ministers resign over eavesdropping scandal
Three Polish government ministers and the speaker of parliament tendered their resignations on Wednesday over a high profile eavesdropping scandal, the country's premier said.

Centrist Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz announced that Parliamentary Speaker Radoslaw Sikorski and the ministers of the treasury, health and sports had resigned as her unpopular government faces a general election this autumn.

Polish media on Tuesday was awash with news of the publication on the Internet of leaked transcripts from a government eavesdropping scandal that erupted in June last year.

00:34   World powers urge Libyans to seize 'last chance' for peace
World powers urged Libya's warring factions at a meeting in Berlin to wrap up peace talks quickly, calling the current round of negotiations a "last chance" for progress.

Twenty-three Libyan envoys joined diplomats from the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council in the German capital and other Western nations at a meeting announced Tuesday by Bernardino Leon, chief of the UN Support Mission in Libya.

The governments and the EU issued a statement calling on "all Libyan parties to overcome the remaining obstacles to an agreement, to create a conducive environment for a lasting and inclusive solution to the current conflicts, to immediately cease all hostilities and to prevent all actions that may disturb the political process."

Libya descended into chaos after a 2011 NATO-backed uprising toppled and killed dictator Moamer Kadhafi, with heavily armed former rebels carving out fiefdoms across the country.

Germany's top diplomat, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who hosted the Berlin meeting, said that time was running out to wrap up a peace accord.

"The round of negotiations that just began moderated by Bernardino Leon is perhaps the last chance for a long time for Libya to avoid breaking apart," he said at the meeting.

Participants said in the final communique that they would offer "significant support" to a government of national accord in the oil-rich country.

Leon is pushing for a final peace agreement before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on June 17.

"We can continue to work for days and months to reach the perfect agreement but Libya doesn't have the time," Leon said.

He presented a draft deal to delegations from the rival sides at talks in Morocco this week but Libya's internationally recognised parliament said yesterday it was "very unhappy" with the proposal.

00:34   Three guards charged over New York inmate death
A current and two former corrections officers have been charged in connection with the beating death of an inmate at New York's notorious Rikers Island jail in 2012, prosecutors said today.

It is the latest development relating to what prosecutors have called "a pervasive and deep-seated culture of violence" at what is one of the largest municipal jails in the United States.

Ronald Spear, 52, died in the early hours of December 19, 2012 after being repeatedly kicked in the head while lying face down and restrained, on the floor of a medical wing of the prison.

He had been seriously ill with kidney disease and was assaulted after getting into an expletive-fueled row with then corrections officer Brian Coll about seeing a doctor, court papers said.

Coll, 45, who is no longer a Rikers guard, and currentcorrections officer Byron Taylor, 31, were arrested by the FBI Wednesday in connection with the death and covering up the assault.
