The government seems to have done a sudden and sharp U-turn from its statement yesterday that the plot to launch the terror attack in Gurdaspur, Punjab, was hatched in Pakistan.

NDTV quoting government sources said that India now believes that the Pakistan government's support is not visible in the Gurdaspur attack and there is fresh evidence that the the plot was hatched 17 days before the attack and the Pakistan government did not know of the attack.

Pakistan has maintained that it categorically rejected the Indian assertion. A statement from its foreign office said yesterday, "In the Gurdaspur incident, blames were apportioned to Pakistan in the Indian media, even when the encounter with terrorists was still going on."

Just yesterday, home minister Rajnath Singh warned of "a befitting reply" to terror attacks. Seven people were killed in Gurdaspur just 18 km from the border.
