21:08   One more video surfaces in Gurdaspur terror attack
As investigators continued their probe into Monday's terror strike, one more video surfaced today showing three armed men in combat uniforms walking on a road, minutes before the attack on police station here.

"The CCTV footage shows the three terrorists walking on road in army fatigues with arms and backpacks on July 27 at 4.59 am," officials said.

The images were captured by a shop different from the one whose CCTV had caught them separately. Those images had surfaced yesterday, showing three men, wearing Army fatigues, having big backpacks and carrying AK assault rifles, walking away from the camera on a road at 4:55 a.m.

Meanwhile, the two GPS devices recoverd from the slain terrorists are being examined minutely by forensic experts to get some concrete information regarding the plot and those behind the attack, officials said.

Preliminary probe suggests that the attackers came from Pakistan and belonged to LeT terror outfit, the officials said.

All the three militants were killed in the 12-hour-long gun battle with the police and elite commandos of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT).

Police sources said a night vision device, believed to have been left behind by the Gurdaspur attackers on the railway track, had US marking.

19:44   When Attorney General Rohatgi had a spat with Memon's lawyer
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi and senior advocate T R Andhyarujina today had heated exchanges at the fag end of the hearing on the plea of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon when the former questioned the latter's locus to argue the case, calling the convict a "traitor".

"You have no right to intervene," the attorney general said when Andhyarujina started advancing rejoinder arguments in favour of Memon's plea after the lawyer for the convict had finished the submissions.

Reacting to this, Andhyarujina said "the mercy plea is not a matter of grace. It is rather constitutional right of the convict" and Memon "cannot be hanged tomorrow at 7:00 am" without him exhausting all remedies. "His mercy petition (before the Maharashtra Governor) is still pending... How can that be? He cannot be hanged with his mercy plea still pending," the usually calm senior lawyer said.

Rohatgi shot back "it is not the matter of adjudication here." Andhyarujina then referred to the fundamental rights of the condemned convict and said his life was "hanging through a thread" and his efforts to win life till the last breath should not be mocked. "What about the rights of the 257 persons (who died in blasts) and several hundreds who got injured," the AG asked and called Memon a "traitor" saying "the Supreme Court says so in its judgment".

All procedures for hanging Memon have to be cleared 12 hours prior including health check-ups of the person. The Nagpur jail authorities say that Memon is both physically and mentally fit. His lawyer had argued that Memon was a schizophrenic and was ailing and therefore should not be given the death penalty.

Reports say that Yakub will be woken up at 3 am, and after a bath and a health check-up, he will be taken to the hanging yard inside Nagpur jail. The government has earmarked Rs 22 lakh for the hanging, say TV reports.

18:29   Yakub has not made his will so far, says his lawyer
Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon has not prepared any will so far, the convict's lawyer Anil Gedam said. He probably thought he would survive and will not be hanged which is why he did not prepare any will," Gedam said.

After his execution as per the TADA court verdict, Yakub's mortal remains are most likely to be claimed by his family Gedam said.

Quoting Chapter XI of the Jail Manual, he said the Jail Superintendent of Nagpur Central Prison has been vested with powers to decide with regard to the body of a death row convict.

After the inquest, the post-mortem will be conducted by a team of doctors including a forensic medicine expert from the Government Medical College, Nagpur, following which the Jail Superintendent can bury the body in the prison premises itself.

His inner circle, made up of village mullahs who have known one another for decades, has provided the active leadership of the Taliban's many local factions.

Officials in the presidential palace said Mullah Omar was in custody of the Pakistani security forces in Karachi. Aimal Faizi, spokesman for former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai said the issue was shared by the US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The death of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam led to an outpouring of grief across the country with tributes flowing in from across all quarters. However, there was one person who didn't think much of the former President's accomplishments as a scientist.

Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan in an interview to BBC said Abdul Kalam was an ordinary scientist. A Q Khan, considered the father of Pakistan's nuclear programme said, "Kalam used to prefer simplicity in all walks of life but he was an ordinary scientist."n a phone interview to BBC, Khan said he could not remember anything noteworthy that Kalam had achieved.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister and the NDA was in power at the time. "He (Kalam) was made the President because the BJP wanted to garner Muslim votes," Khan said.

14:04   Rameswaram shuts shop to queue up for last glimpse of Kalam
Rediff.com's Saisuresh Sivaswamy and A Ganesh Nadar reporting from Rameswaram say the town plagued by an unusual problem. It's difficult to find a restaurant open for lunch.

No, there is no shortage of food despite the thousands that have camped in the small seaside town where India's most loved and respected former president APJ Abdul Kalam will be laid to rest tomorrow.

The reason the restaurants are shut is because the owners and the staff want to queue up to pay their final respects to Dr Kalam as his body is set to arrive soon from Madurai. In fact, as we write this, the ministry of defence tweets this picture showing his body in the chopper. It was only at the fourth halt that our hungry correspondents found a restaurant open for lunch. Will dinner be the same?

In the passing away of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, India has lost not only a visionary scientist and an institution-builder, but also a staunch nationalist who was an inspirational figure for people across generations. Turning India into a developed country of the first world was his dream, and he set about making this a reality through words and deeds, first as scientist, then as the President, and later, till the very end, as an ordinary citizen.

12:39   PM to reach Rameswaram early in the morning tomorrow
The Prime Minister will arrive early in the morning at Rameswaram and attend Dr Kalam's funeral at around 11 am, sources said.

Penning his tribute to the 'missile man' and who was felicitated with the highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, Modi in his blog, said "Bharat has lost a Ratna".

"Our scientist-President - and one who was genuinely loved and admired across the masses - never measured success by material possessions," he said. "For him, the counterpoint to poverty was the wealth of knowledge, in both its scientific and spiritual manifestations," the Prime Minister said.

He remembered Kalam as one who took little from the world, and gave all he could to the society. "Kalamji refused to be defeated by circumstances. His character, commitment and inspirational vision shine through his life. He was unencumbered by ego; flattery left him cold," Modi said.

Describing him as a "hero" of India's defence, the Prime Minister said his contributions to "our nuclear and space achievements have given India the muscle to be confident of her place in the region and the world." Modi said his profound idealism was secure because it rested on a foundation of realism. Kalam was "equally at ease before an audience of suave, globe-trotting ministers and a class of young students", Modi said.

While Yakub Memon hangs on to life by sheer persistence, the Supreme Court today dismissed the curative petition on its verdict that converted former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's killers' death sentences into life terms.

The central government last week told the Supreme Court that no mercy could be shown to the killers of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi as it opposed the Tamil Nadu government's move set free seven convicts by granting them remission of sentence.

Opposing the Tamil Nadu government's plea to release the seven convicts, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar told the constitution bench of Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit that "our former prime minister was killed by these people. There was a conspiracy to kill him in which foreign nationals were also involved. What mercy could be shown to them."

Appearing for the other victims of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination, Ranjit Kumar stated his stand while opposing the plea by senior counsel Ram Jathmalani appearing for one of the convicts V. Sriharan alias Murugan and Rakesh Dwivedi appearing for the Tamil Nadu government.

The constitution bench was hearing a reference by three judge bench on the question whether after the commutation of death sentence into life imprisonment, could the state government further grant remission of sentence to release the Rajiv Gandhi assassins.

10:42   Will Yakub be hanged? Three-judge SC bench begins hearing
The three-judge Supreme Court panel has begun hearing on the plea of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon seeking stay on the execution slated for July 30 and quashing of death warrant.

The three-judge bench was formed after a split decision on hanging of Memon by a two-judge bench of justices Anil R. Dave and Kurian Joseph.

Senior counsel Raju Ramachandran, appearing for Memon, urged Chief Justice Dattu to grant stay of execution of Memon, however, the court did not pass any order on the plea.

Earlier on Tuesday, Justice Anil R Dave and Justice Kurien Joseph took differing stands on Memon's plea challenging his death penalty and urged the chief justice to set up "an appropriate bench" so that matter could be heard as soon as possible.

The bench of Justice Dave and Justice Kurian, in its common order after pronouncing their divergent judgments, said: "In view of the disagreement between us, the registry is directed to place the papers before Hon'ble The Chief Justice of India, preferably today, so that an appropriate Bench could be constituted and the matter can be heard on merits as soon as possible, preferably tomorrow i.e. on 29.07.2015."

The Anti-Hijacking Bill 2014, introduced in Rajya Sabha in December last, was referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture.

The parliamentary panel submitted its report in March this year, wherein it had suggested various changes including making hoax calls a punishable offence and providing adequate compensation for victims of hijacking.
