M I Khan reports from Patna: Reports of stopping of trains and road blocks are coming in from Patna following the bandh called by the Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar against withholding of the caste-based census data by the central government.
Thousands of RJD workers and supporters took to streets, blocked highways, rail tracks and bridges. They stopped over a dozen
trains at Patna, Darbhanga, Hajipur, Jehanabad, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur railway stations.
"Road services were also hit. No long-route buses are plying. Highways are deserted as trucks have been halted at different places," a police officer said.
Schools in Patna are closed as well.
The state government has made elaborate security arrangements in view of the shutdown, a senior government official informed.
In Bihar, the shutdown is likely to be total as the state's ruling Janata Dal-United is backing RJD.
RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had on Sunday observed a fast and threatened to call for an indefinite shutdown in the state if the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government failed to make public the caste-based census data.
