Former president Abdul Kalam no more

Former president A P J Abdul Kalam has passed away.

The former president had been admitted to a hospital in Shillong following a sudden illness on Monday.

Kalam passed away at 6.40 pm.

Kalam, 84, collapsed at a function in IIM and was rushed to Bethany Hospital, M Kharkrang, SP Khasi Hills, said.  

Reports indicate that the former president was interacting with students at the IIM when he suddenly collapsed at which point he was immediately rushed to the hospital.

Kalam served as the 11th President on India from 2002 to 2007.

Medical teams from the Indian Army have also reached Shillong in order to aid in Kalam's treatment. Additionally, a support system of doctors from the Easter Command of the Indian Air Force have also been dispatched to aid in the former president's treatment.

"The former president was brought almost dead to our hospital," John Sailo Ryntathiang, director of Bethany Hospital, told reporters.

Meghalaya Governor V Shanmughanathan and Chief Secretary PBO. Warjri visited the Bethany hospital where Kalam had been admitted.
