This picture of a black police chief helping a man has gone viral. Here's the story. The white man wearing a swastika T-shirt was at a Ku Klux Klan rally in South Carolina, when he felt unwell as a result of a heat stroke.

The compassionate cop in the picture is Leroy Smith, the director of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, who choose to overlook deeply ingrained race divides in the US and help the man. No wonder then, that the picture has been retweeted over 3,000 times since it was shared on Twitter. The photo was provided to the Associated Press by photographer Rob Godfrey.

The KKK rally in support of the Confederate flag came a week and a day after the flag was removed from outside the Capitol building. The KKK in the 1950s has focused on opposition to the Civil Rights Movement, is virulently anti black and has used threats of violence during the anti-segregation movement and race riots of the sixties.
