Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has sought Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, for Savitribai and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule for their "extraordinary" contribution to the society.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Fadnavis said "Savitribai and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule had played an important role in the development of the county. Considering the extraordinary work they have done, they deserve to be honoured with Bharat Ratna".

"Mahatma Jyotirao Phule occupies a unique position among social reformers of Maharashtra. In the 19th century, Phule revolted against the unjust caste system under which millions of people had suffered for centuries. In particular, he courageously upheld the cause of untouchables and took up cudgels for the poorer peasant," he said.

He also said women have secured top position and are playing an important role in the development of society.

"All this is due to the efforts made by Savitribai Phule, one of India's foremost educationalist and social activist. Savitribai's work in the field of education and her contribution to the 'Satyashodhak movement' is well known," Fadnavis said.
