"The diaries reveal benefits for not only chief minister Raman Singh, but his wife, sister-in-law, his cook and others. The moot point is that if there are diaries with the chief minister, his wife and his sister-in-law's names present, then why is no action being taken against them?" he said.

13:56   Modi vs Modi on Sri Lanka policies
Looking back, the most thoughtful part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sri Lanka in March might have been his meeting with former president Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo. It was a brief meeting, but was highly symbolic, and was probably hastily arranged as an afterthought, since it took place on the premises of the Indian High Commissioner's residence in Colombo and was Modi's "last of 40 plus engagements'.

Apparently, it didn't deter Modi that Rajapaksa had alleged in an interview with the South China Morning Post that the American and Indian diplomats in Colombo worked to depose him from power; arguably, it spurred Modi to reach out to Rajapaksa, politician-to-politician, one-on-one, says M K Bhadrakumar in his blog.

They claimed to never support the VIP culture or use cars and bungalows or any kind of perks because they are 'common' people," Upadhyay told ANI.

04:38   Could searchers' sonars have missed wreckage of MH370?
Amid rising frustrations over the expensive, so-far fruitless search for vanished Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, experts are questioning the competence of the company in charge, including whether crews may have passed over the sunken wreckage without even noticing.

Such carping in a small, fiercely competitive and highly specialized industry isn't unusual, and some of the strongest comments have come from a company whose bid for the lucrative job failed.

But others have also criticised what they suspect is shoddy work, inappropriate equipment use and a focus on speed over thoroughness by the Dutch underwater survey company hired by Australia to find the plane that vanished in the Indian Ocean on March 8 last year with 239 people aboard.

There are also calls for the government to release the growing mountain of sonar data collected so far, which skeptics say could show whether searchers have overlooked holes in the dragnet big enough to conceal a fragmented Boeing 777.

04:37   UNHRC adopts resolution on Palestine, India abstains
India has for the first time abstained from voting on a resolution on Palestine adopted at the UN rights body that calls for accountability by parties involved in last year's conflict in Gaza.

India, however, maintained that there was no change in its long standing position on support to the Palestinian cause.

The resolution on "ensuring accountability and justice for all violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem" was adopted at the UN Human Rights Council with 41 votes in favour, five abstentions and one vote against the resolution.
India abstained on voting along with Ethiopia, Kenya, Macedonia and Paraguay.

The Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), Ajit Kumar, in an explanation of the vote said, "We are not a party to the Rome Statute or the International Criminal Court (ICC) for reasons that have been enumerated earlier. Taking that into account India has decided to abstain from this resolution".

In response to a question on India's vote, an External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson in New Delhi said, "There is no change in India's long standing position on support to the Palestinian cause."

"The issue in this particular Resolution was the reference to the International Criminal Court. India is not a signatory to the Rome Statute establishing the ICC," the Spokesperson said in a statement.

04:07   Russian MPs pass 'right to be forgotten' Internet law
Russian lawmakers today passed a bill allowing people to force Internet search engines to remove links to data about them, overriding objections from the country's largest search provider.

The legislation -- broader than the European Union's "right to be forgotten" initiative -- was passed by overwhelming majority in Russia's Kremlin-loyal parliament.

President Vladimir Putin still needs to sign the law for it to come into effect. The proposed legislation could be implemented as early as January next year.

The bill allows people to force Internet search engines to remove links to data they claim is inaccurate, outdated or published unlawfully, and has sparked fears that it could be used to delete information critical of the authorities.

An earlier version of the bill was tweaked after opposition from Russia's main search engine Yandex, but the company said it still had major objections to the final version of the law.

"Our attempts to introduce some crucial amendments to this bill have unfortunately been unsuccessful," Yandex said in a statement.

"Our point has always been that a search engine cannot take on the role of a regulatory body and act as a court or law enforcement agency," it said.

04:07   Top Greece court rules referendum can go ahead
Greece's top administrative court ruled today that a weekend referendum asking voters whether or not they support bailout conditions can go ahead, rejecting a challenge by two individuals.

The petitioners -- one of them a former judge on the Council of State that decided the case -- had argued the plebiscite violated the constitution by asking citizens to decide a "public finances" question.

Their challenge had also insisted the question was couched in technical language which could confuse voters.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is urging Greeks to vote 'No' in the referendum and thereby reject austerity measures demanded by international creditors.

Opposition parties including the centre-right New Democracy are campaigning for a 'Yes' vote, fearing that Greece could crash out of the euro otherwise.

The former judge who co-presented the petition to the Council of State on Wednesday was reported by Greek media to have ties to New Democracy.

04:06   UNESCO condemns IS destruction of Syria's Palmyra antiquities
UNESCO has condemned the destruction by Islamic State group jihadists of antiquities in the Syrian city of Palmyra, describing it as an attempt to strip the people of their heritage in order "to enslave them".

"These new destructions of cultural goods of the site of Palmyra reflect the brutality and ignorance of extremist groups and their disregard of local communities and of the Syrian people," UNESCO director-general, Irina Bokova said yesterday.

Among the antiquities destroyed was the Lion Statue of Athena -- a unique piece of more than 3 metres high that stood outside a museum, which was smashed Saturday, Bokova said.

The limestone statue was discovered in 1977 by a Polish archaeological mission at the temple of Al-Lat, a pre-Islamic Arabian goddess, and dated back to the 1st century BC.

Bokova also expressed outrage at the destruction of funerary busts of Palmyra, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site captured by IS on May 21.

"The destruction of funerary busts of Palmyra in a public square, in front of crowds and children asked to witness the looting of their heritage is especially perverse," she said.

04:05   Boko Haram kills nearly 200 in 48 hours of Nigeria slaughter
Boko Haram carried out a fresh wave of massacres in northeastern Nigeria today, locals said, killing nearly 200 people in 48 hours of violence which President Muhammadu Buhari blasted as "inhuman and barbaric".

The militants have staged multiple attacks across restive Borno state since Wednesday, gunning down worshippers at evening Ramadan prayers, shooting women in their homes, and dragging men from their beds in the dead of night.

A young female suicide bomber also killed 12 worshippers when she blew herself up in a mosque in Borno. While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Boko Haram has used both men and young women and girls as human bombs in the past.

"President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest wave of killings... describing them as most inhuman and barbaric," the presidency said in a statement.

The bloodshed is the worst since Buhari came to power in May, vowing to root out the insurgency that has claimed more than 15,000 lives.

Up to 50 armed men on motorbikes stormed the village of Mussa in the latest atrocity on Friday, shooting villagers and burning their homes, survivor Bitrus Dangana told AFP.
